Accordingly this wind power generator has an excellent starting performance and can control the excessive rotation at low cost.

A self setting and self powered system for adjusting the blade angles of a wind turbine such that they have a high angle of attack when parked to promote early start up, move to their ideal setting angle for normal running, can respond to gusts and lulls with appropriate changes, and feathers the blades to limit the rpm and reduce loads in storm conditions. The system balances the thrust loads on the turbine against centripetal forces generated by masses reacting to the rpm, increasing the blade pitch with gusts to increase torque and hence rotational acceleration and reducing blade pitch in lulls to conserve rotational momentum, and uses springs to establish the starting position and the rpm limit appropriate for the generator mechanism.

A wear-free, self-contained control device for an aerodynamic emergency brake of a wind energy converter is presented that comprises multiple components in order to provide a most effective means to control the rotation of a vertical axis wind turbine by a brake, which is able to activate itself without external actuation in malfunction situations and is able to shut down the vertical axis wind turbine. Therefore, a mass element is utilised to store mechanical energy which in turn is used to deploy an aerodynamic braking operation. It also represents a means to control and limit the amount of torque, as absorbed by the turbine in high-wind conditions, and thus provides the ability to harvest electrical/mechanical energy, beyond the normal operational wind speeds of turbines.

The present invention is for an apparatus and method for a passive pitchable device for wind turbines comprising: a camshaft having cam grooves engraved; a cylindrical shell; an axial compression spring; said blade assembly and said cylindrical shell are fastened together by screws; a plurality of balls that roll along said cam grooves, and convert the axial displacement to rotation or pitch angle; and wherein the passive pitchable device ensures said blades are at the optimum angle of incidence in the stationary position; as the rotor turns, the net force between centrifugal force on said blade and the resistant force from said compression spring causes the device to move axially outward while rotating to adjust the pitch of the rotor blade so that angle of incidence is optimal for the given wind speed; as the wind speed exceeds the design speed and the centrifugal force on the rotor blade continues to increase, the device continues the move axially outward while rotating in the opposite direction as to adjust the pitch of the blade in the opposite direction so that the rotor performance is controlled and severe dynamic loads are avoided.

The generator housing contains a first generator having a first generator output and a second generator having a second generator output. A hydraulic strut supports the generator housing and allows angular adjustment thereof. A hydraulic pump selectively pressurizes the hydraulic strut to effect adjustment thereof. A braking system is selectively actuable to slow rotation of the main shaft. A flyweight assembly and a four position speed sensing switch together detect rotational speed of the main shaft, selectively connect the generators with the main shaft, and selectively activate the braking system and hydraulic pump as appropriate according to the speed detected by the speed sensing switch.
