摘要: The optical amplifier realizes EDFA amplification of optical signals in new bands (the Snull- and S-bands), at wavelengths of 1450 to 1530 nm. The amplifier uses multiple erbium-doped fibers to amplify optical signals at wavelengths of 1450 to 1530 nm. Each of the multiple optical filters is interposed between the individual erbium-doped fibers. The sum of the transmission characteristics of the multiple filters is identical to an inverted EDF wavelength gain characteristic at wavelengths of 1450 to 1530 nm which is then shifted to the direction that the transmission increases.

摘要: An optical fiber used for an optical amplifier, is formed by doping glass with rare-earth ions. Both praseodymium ions (Pr+3) and erbium ions (Er+3) are used as the rare-earth ions, and the glass is a fluoride glass or a sulfide glass. The optical fiber can be used at wavelengths of both 1.3 &mgr;m and 1.55 &mgr;m. The light amplification efficiency of an optical amplifier made of the optical fiber can be improved compared to that of an optical amplifier formed of only Pr+3 or only Er+3.

摘要: The oxyhalide rare earth doped laser glass of the present invention comprises the substitution of fluorine for oxygen in glasses having the general molar batch composition of 50% SiO.sub.2, 25% CaO, 25% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 to improve the distribution of rare earth dopants in the glass. The general molar batch composition of the invention ranges from approximately 45-70% SiO.sub.2, 15-35% CaO, 10-25% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 4-15% Al.sub.2 F.sub.6, and 0.001-2% Er.sub.2 O.sub.3. This substitution of fluorine into the 2SiO.sub.2. Al.sub.2 O.sub.3. CaO glass system provides erbium doped laser glasses having a Er.sub.2 O.sub.3 batch content of 0.01 mole % Er.sub.2 O.sub.3 to 1.2 mole % Er.sub.2 O.sub.3 (500 ppm Er.sub.2 O.sub.3 to 5.68 wt. % Er.sub.2 O.sub.3) which show little to no concentration quenching and exhibit useful fluorescence lifetimes of approximately 6 milliseconds (ms) or greater.

摘要: A solid state laser apparatus includes a laser medium of a uniaxial crystal, such as a fluoride crystal, having a negative temperature variation ratio of refractive index, laser diodes for optically pumping the laser medium, a set of mirrors positioned at two longitudinal ends of the laser medium for oscillating the light in the laser medium and outputting a beam, and a system for cooling the laser medium. The thermal lens effect is suppressed by causing a thermal gradient to exist along only one chosen axis of the laser medium and eliminating the thermal lens diopter along the chosen axis by optimizing a ratio L/D of length L and diameter D of the laser medium.

摘要: A continuous wave(CW) activator ion doped fiber laser is presented which lases at a normally self-terminating laser transition at a slope efficiency greater than that achieved by a self-terminating fiber laser. Two laser transitions, one corresponding to a self-terminating laser transition and the other to a transition out of the lower level of the self-terminating transition, are simultaneously stimulated in the activator ion doped fiber. Through simultaneous lasing of the two wavelengths corresponding to these transitions, the lower level of the self-terminating transition is sufficiently depopulated so that CW operation is achieved.

摘要: A broadband emission material according to the present invention includes: a fluoride glass containing 20 to 45 mol % of AlF3, 25 to 63 mol % of alkaline-earth fluorides in total and 3 to 25 mol % of at least one fluoride of element selected from the group consisting of Y, La, Gd and Lu; and ytterbium ions incorporated in the fluoride glass as divalent rare-earth ions so as to serve as a luminescent center, wherein the fluoride glass includes 1 to 15 mol % of at least one halide of element selected from the group consisting of Al, Ba, Sr, Ca and Mg and element selected from the group consisting of Cl, Br and I; and wherein the alkaline-earth fluorides includes 0 to 15 mol % of MgF2, 7 to 25 mol % of CaF2, 0 to 22 mol % of SrF2 and 0 to 5 mol % of BaF2.
