The modem preferably features an adaptive equalizer with coefficients which are saved and reused for processing of subsequent analog signals, in order to reduce the time required to reach convergence. In addition, preferably the modem features an automatic carrier frequency control which adjusts the sampled digital signal according to both the carrier phase offset and the carrier frequency offset. Again, in order to process the signal more quickly and efficiently, preferably the carrier frequency offset is stored and reused for processing subsequent signals.

A method for an adaptive equalization apparatus in a multiple-link hopping radio system includes hopping among a plurality of radio links to receive variable-length bursts of radio signals on the plurality of radio links and equalizing amplitude and phase variations of a slow channel for each radio link from a received burst on the radio link. Further, the method includes storing the estimated tap coefficients pertinent to each radio link and using the tap weights of the current burst of the radio link to reliably pre-compensate the channel amplitude and phase distortion of a next received burst on the radio link.

A system and method for enhancing the performance of an equalizer in a modem. Multiple techniques are disclosed which improve the modem performance. A first technique uses stored parameters for each burst from each remote site to demodulate a received data stream. A second technique compensates for the gain droop caused by storing parameters across each burst. A third technique minimizes errors caused by adapting the equalizer coefficients for each data burst by analyzing the SN ratio and error rate of the received burst. A fourth technique improves the convergence of the equalizer by using a two-part preamble, whereby both parts are transmitted using different modulation techniques. A fifth technique is provided which performs a soft reset of the modem without performing a complete reset of the modem. A sixth technique determines a modem adaptation factor based on the expected modulation type of an incoming burst transmission. A seventh technique calculates a phase correction value for the stored tap values and applies the value to the incoming signal.

Each handset has a handset transceiver for establishing a time-division multiple access (TDMA) link over a shared channel with the base unit via the base transceiver, in which each handset communicates during an exclusive time slot of a TDMA scheme that allocates time slots to handsets during an exclusive time slot of a TDMA scheme that allocates time slots to active handsets for receiving a spread spectrum signal comprising successive chips representing successive symbols. Each receiver has one or more demodulation loops for demodulating the received spread spectrum signal, wherein each demodulation loop is characterized by one or more demodulation loop parameters. A parallel correlator of the receiver detects a peak bin and provides the peak bin and two adjacent bins. An error estimator of the receiver adjusts the demodulation parameters in accordance with the peak bin and the two adjacent bins to optimize demodulation of the spread spectrum signal.

A circuit for automatically digitally synthesizing an output impedance, which may be a matching line terminating impedance, is provided. The means for establishing the desired output impedance characteristic is accomplished using a simplified recursive digital filter arrangement. In addition, means are provided for eliminating the effects of incidental undesirable shunting impedances.
