The facsimile system includes an key input unit for allowing a user to set the facsimile system in an AUTO mode; a proximity sensor for sensing whether the user is within a proximity zone of the facsimile system; and a controller for automatically changing an operation mode of the facsimile system from the telephone mode to the facsimile mode, when the facsimile system is set in the AUTO mode and when the user is not within the proximity zone of the facsimile system.

A ring signal is generated in response to reception of a voice communication request signal requesting for a voice communication after completion of the image data communication. If the intended recipient of the receiving facsimile system is not available to answer the voice communication request, identification information of a counterpart's facsimile system and communication time are stored in a memory for a visual display in order to inform the intended recipient to call back at some later time.

The telephone set includes a telephone for conducting voice communications over the telephone network and a telephone answering machine for automatically responding to calls received by the telephone set over the telephone network. One or more operational parameters of the answering machine are set to define how it automatically responds to calls. A switch connects either the facsimile machine or the telephone set to a telephone network. One or more operational parameters of the answering machine is initially detected and stored. A controller controls the switch to connect either the facsimile machine or the telephone set to a telephone network based on a comparison of the stored parameter(s) and subsequently detected operational parameter(s) detected when the answering machine responds to a call.
