A novel silver halide photographic material is provided comprising a support having provided thereon at least one silver halide emulsion layer and containing at least one polyoxyethylenic compound in the emulsion layer or at least one other hydrophilic colloid layer, wherein silver halide grains contained in the emulsion layer are chemically sensitized in the presence of a water-soluble sensitizing dye having a solubility in 20.degree. C. water of 0.2 g/100 ml H.sub.2 O or more, or said water-soluble sensitizing dye is added to the silver halide emulsion after chemical sensitization and before coating. Such a water-soluble sensitizing dye is preferably selected from methine dyes and styryl dyes such as a cyanine dye, a merocyanine dye, a hemicyanine dye, a rhodacyanine dye, an oxonol dye, and a hemioxonol dye.

A silver halide photographic light-sensitive material comprising a support having the first photographic structural layer comprising one or more layers on a side of the support and the second photographic structural layer comprising one or more layers on the other side of the support, in which at least one of the photographic structural layers comprises a silver halide light-sensitive emulsion layer, and the total amount of gelatin contained in the photographic structural layer comprising the silver halide emulsion layer is within the range of from 2.25 g/m.sup.2 to 3.15 g/m.sup.2. The uppermost layer of the photographic structural layer comprising the silver halide emulsion is formed by coating of a solution having a surface tension of from 15 to 26 dyn/cm, and the second photographic structural layer is coated and gelled simultaneously with coating and drying of the first photographic structural layer. The photographic material is improved in the adaptability for super-rapid processing with the total duration of 20 to 60 sec. and the anti-scratch property.

A negative silver halide photographic light-sensitive material is provided, having a silver halide emulsion layer, which layer comprises silver haloiodide grains prepared in the presence of an iridium salt in an amount of 1.times.10.sup.-8 to 1.times.10.sup.-5 mole per one mole of silver, wherein the silver iodide content in the surface part of said grain is larger than the average silver iodide content in said grain, and additionally containing in said emulsion layer or in some other hydrophilic colloid layer, a compound of formula (I):R.sub.1 --NHNH--CHO (I)wherein R.sub.1 represents an aliphatic group or an aromatic group. Said photographic light-sensitive material is, after being exposed imagewise, developed with a developer containing 0.15 mole/l or more sulfite ion and having a pH value of 9.5-12.3, to form negative images having ultra-high contrast. The present photographic light-sensitive material has good photographic characteristics of sensitivity and gamma value, and the preservation stability thereof is good.

Alkanediyl bridged benzimidazolo monomethine cyanine dyes are disclosed wherein at least one benzimidazolo nucleus is provided with an electron-withdrawing group. A disclosed preparation of the dyes includes producing an electron-withdrawing group substituted bis(2-nitrophenyl)-2-R.sup.1 -propanediamide, where R.sup.1 is hydrogen or alkyl; converting the nitro groups to primary amine substituents; removing the elements of water to effect ring closure; and thereafter providing the -CR.sup.1 - linked benzimidazole nuclei so formed with an N,N'-alkanediyl bridging group and quaternizing substituents. Dye synthesis is completed by reducing the -CR.sup.1 - linking group to the corresponding methine. The dyes are useful as sensitizers in silver halide emulsions and photographic elements.
