Abstract:
A cathode for an electron tube has a layer of electron-emissive substance containing alkaline earth metal carbonates having capillary crystals, to which 0.01-20.0 wt % of both a lanthanum (La) compound and a magnesium (Mg) compound or an La--Mg compound, based upon the weight of the alkaline earth metal carbonate, is added. The cathode enjoys full interchangeability with a conventional oxide cathode and a 15-20% longer lifetime.
Abstract:
A power supply for supplying the heating coils of a tube (WR), in particular a traveling-wave tube, wherein a transformer (Tr) and an inverter (S1, S2) are provided in the heating circuit of the tube (WR), and the frequency of the AC current is reduced from a high initial value to a lower value during the heat-up time of the tube (WR) in such a way that the change of the inductive voltage drop caused by this frequency change limits the heating current at the leakage inductance (LS) of the transformer (Tr).
Abstract:
An electron tube device comprising an electron tube having a line cathode, and an electric power source for supplying power pulses to the line cathode. The electron tube device comprises determination means for determining, during a power pulse, the value of a physical quantity which depends on the temperature of the line cathode, comparison means for comparing the value with a reference value and for supplying a control signal, and termination means to end the power pulse in dependence on the control signal. Consequently, the temperature of the line cathode is more stable.

A directly heated cathode comprises a metal tube having a filling of powdered metal which extends beyond the tube and in which is embedded an electrical wire which is coaxial and extensive with said the outer tube over part of its length. The electrical wire is coated with insulating material which is normally alumina. The tube, the metal powder filling and the wire are sintered together, giving a relatively robust structure.
Abstract:
An electron-emitting surface is provided with a material reducing the electron work function, which is obtained from a suitable reaction. The reaction mixture or the product to be decomposed, for example CsN.sub.3, is present in a surface depression of a semiconductor body, while one or more pn junctions act as a heating diode. Upon heating, cesium is released and deposited on the electron-emitting surface.
Abstract:
A system for stabilizing the cathode emissions of an in-line gun cathode ray tube includes subsystems functionally identical to one another linked to each of the cathodes of an in-line gun cathode ray tube. During the time that the CRT beam is retracing vertically, each subsystem imposes a fixed, predetermined voltage on a cathode in the cathode ray tube, samples the current flowing to the cathode, compares the sampled current to a predetermined, desired reference current for the cathode, develops a differential signal representing the difference, if any, between the sampled current and the reference current, and then drives the current flowing to the cathode from its actual value to its predetermined, reference value so as to maintain a predetermined, desired ratio of the currents flowing to each of the cathodes.
Abstract:
A digital cathode current control circuit for controlling the cathode current of a traveling wave tube (TWT) amplifier is disclosed. The cathode current control circuit includes circuitry for providing a comparison signal indicative of the occurrence and amplitude of TWT cathode current pulses; clocking circuitry responsive to the comparison signal for providing a clock signal delayed relative the occurrence of a cathode current pulse; comparison circuitry for comparing the comparison signal with predetermined reference signals indicative of a predetermined cathode current level, and for providing adjustment signals indicative of the adjustment of the TWT cathode current necessary to tend to achieve the predetermined cathode current; and counter circuitry clocked by the delayed clock signal for providing an output count in response to the adjustment signals.
Abstract:
A precision cathode current regulator for controlling cathode current in a cathode-ray tube having a field effect transistor which is stabilized by an operational amplifier connected in a feedback mode. A second operational amplifier is electrically coupled to the field effect transistor for measuring cathode voltage accurately without affecting the regulated current.

A method for manufacturing a thermionic cathode is provided which comprises cutting a bar from a multi-layer structure having a first layer of thermoelectron emissive compound and a third layer of metal of high melting point, a second layer of reaction barrier being interposed between said first and third layers, the bar being cut in a direction substantially perpendicular to that of the layers, sharpening the end of the first layer of the bar and then providing current terminals with the third layer of the bar. According to the method of the invention, a thermionic cathode capable of emitting stable electron beams of high intensity for a long period of time can be manufactured.
Abstract:
Means and method for energizing and regulating a neutron generator tube having a target, an ion source and a replenisher includes providing a negative high voltage to the target and monitoring the target current. A constant current from a constant current source is divided into a shunt current and a replenisher current in accordance with the target current. The replenisher current is applied to the replenisher in a neutron generator tube so as to control the neutron output in accordance with the target current.
