A switching control IC outputs a rectangular wave signal from an output terminal thereof to a driving circuit. A feedback circuit compares a value of a divided voltage of a voltage across output terminals of a switching power supply device with a reference voltage, generates a feedback signal, and inputs the feedback signal into a feedback terminal of the switching control IC. A capacitor and a Zener diode are connected between the feedback terminal and a ground terminal. The Zener diode is selectively connected, and a voltage at the feedback terminal is changed in accordance with the presence of the Zener diode. A voltage at the feedback terminal is detected, and one of a latch method and a hiccup method is selected as a method for an overcurrent protection operation in accordance with the detected voltage.

A battery load leveling arrangement for an electrically powered system in which battery loading is subject to intermittent high current loading utilizes a passive energy storage device and a diode connected in series with the storage device to conduct current from the storage device to the load when current demand forces a drop in battery voltage. A current limiting circuit is connected in parallel with the diode for recharging the passive energy storage device. The current limiting circuit functions to limit the average magnitude of recharge current supplied to the storage device. Various forms of current limiting circuits are disclosed, including a PTC resistor coupled in parallel with a fixed resistor. The current limit circuit may also include an SCR for switching regenerative braking current to the device when the system is connected to power an electric motor.

An apparatus and method for accomplishing DC-to-AC power conversion that combine the AC outputs of n interleaved, time division multiplexed inverters and steer the secondary pulses positively or negatively, as commanded by the time varying reference signal, such that the effective switching, or sampled-data, frequency of any of the inverter or pulse-steering transistors. The n interleaved inverter system can, in turn, be paralleled such that, relative to a single inverter supplying all the power, the losses for any inverter transistor are 1/np, n due to time multiplexing and p due to paralleling.

An inverter for direct current power generation is shown in which both voltage regulation and logical control of the output are achieved by digitally controlling the application of clock signals to the inverter circuit. A standard clock source is used to drive the inverter and digital circuitry, timed from the same clock source, is used to control the gating of clock pulses to the inverter. Entire clock pulses including both positive going and negative going transitions are blocked so as to preserve the balanced excitation of the inverter transformer. Logical control signals can also be used to disable the application of clock pulses.

A bridge type switching transistor inverter circuit for driving high power AC loads such as arc discharge lamps from a DC electrical energy source. Four switching transistors are arranged in bridge configuration that the load may be connected alternately in the inverter circuit between diagonal pairs of switching transistors. Each switching transistor is included in a switching amplifier whose response time is short as compared with the response characteristic of the load and the AC cycle period. A single driver circuit is coupled to the respective switching amplifiers by photocouple isolation means through an electro-optically coupled light emitter-sensor pair. A clock pulse generator provides the necessary signal to the driver circuit which includes a phase splitter driver. A two-stage amplifier receives the signal from the sensor transistor of the photocouple and amplifies it to drive the switching transistor which is, in the preferred embodiment, a power darlington device of the monolithic type.
