A scroll compressor includes a fixed scroll member and an orbiting scroll. The orbiting scroll member is operatively connected to a motor to be driven in an orbiting motion by the motor. The scroll members each include a plate having an inboard surface and an outboard surface. A spiral involute or wrap is formed on the inboard surface of each scroll member plate. The involutes mate to define suction zones at outer ends of the involutes and fluid pockets. The fixed scroll member defines a fluid outlet at the center of the involutes and two inlets positioned proximate the suction zones. At least two idler crank assemblies are provided to maintain the phase relationship and running clearance between the scroll members. The idler crank assemblies each include two operatively connected cranks, one being in the fixed scroll and one being in the orbiting scroll. The fixed scroll crank is externally accessible so that its rotational motion may be harnessed to drive a fan or another compressor stage, for example. Ribs are formed on the surfaces of the plates to facilitate heat dissipation and to make the scroll members more rigid. The involutes are provided with seals which seal against the plate of the opposing scroll member to seal the fluid pockets against leakage. A method is also provided for varying the displacement of the scroll compressor without the need to adjust the counterweight, idler cranks or the housing.

A self-rotation blocking mechanism in a scroll compressor having a movable scroll member and fixed scroll member fixed to a casing. The mechanism is constructed of circumferentially spaced opposing pairs of pins 9 and 10, which are connected to an end plate 12 of the movable scroll member 2 and a faced end wall of the casing 4, respectively, and which are in a side-by-side contacting relationship. The circumferential arrangement of the pins is such that, at every angular position of the movable scroll member, there exists at least one pair of the pins which generates a force in a direction opposite to a self-rotating torque applied to the movable scroll member caused by the compression reaction force. A locally concentrated arrangement of the pairs of the pins for generating such a force can be employed at the angular position which produces a larger value of self-rotating torque. Furthermore, the diameters of the pins are such that one half of the sum of the diameters is equal to or smaller than the radius of the orbital movement of the movable scroll member.

The scroll-type machine includes a novel arrangement of a spring or other flexible member for biasing the motion controlling member in a specific direction. If, during the assembly of the compressor, a ball from the rotation preventing/thrust bearing device rolls into the hollow portion or is accidentally dropped into the hollow portion, the balance weight member pushes the ball along the annular surface until it falls into the recessed portion. Further rotation of the balance weight locks the ball within the recessed portion, thereby preventing further rotation of the drive shaft. Therefore, defects in assembly due to the rotation prevention mechanism may be easily detected.

The biasing passage is in fluid communication with the innermost fluid pocket during only a portion of each of the cycles of orbiting motion and in fluid communication with an intermediate fluid pocket during another portion of the cycles orbiting motion.

The present invention discloses a reliable rotation preventing/thrust bearing device for use in an orbiting member fluid displacement apparatus. The rotation preventing/thrust bearing device includes a discrete fixed portion, a discrete orbital portion, and bearing elements. The fixed portion includes a first annular race and a first ring, both of which are formed separately. The first annular race is placed in a loose fit surrounding a first annular step in an inner surface of the housing and the first ring is attached to the housing. The orbital portion includes a second annular race and a second ring, both of which are formed separately. The second annular race is placed in a loose fit surrounding a second annular step in an end plate of the orbiting member and the second ring is attached to the end plate of the orbiting member. A plurality of pockets of the rings face one another in generally aligned pairs. A bearing element is received in each aligned pair of pockets to prevent the rotation of the orbiting member by the bearing elements interacting with the first and second rings and to carry the axial thrust load from the orbiting member. The first and second annular anti-wear plates are overlaid surrounding the first and second annular races, respectively. The first and second annular anti-wear plates are fixedly placed within the first and second annular steps respectively in order to prevent the circumferential and radial movement thereof.
