    摘要: Elemental silicon is produced by a process and apparatus wherein relatively impure silane (SiH.sub.4) is purified in the gaseous state, while mixed with an inert carrier gas, to a content of electronically active impurities which is no higher than that of "electronic grade" silicon. The silane so purified is then thermally decomposed to form elemental silicon of electronic grade purity, without need for further purification of the elemental silicon itself. The silane purification is carried out by injecting the impure silane gas as a series of timed, spaced pulses into a carrier gas stream which transports the silane pulses to a gas chromatographic column, through which the pulses flow in sequence. The column has a porous polymer or a molecular sieve packing which is specially preconditioned to achieve high resolution separation of the components of the feed. The components of each pulse are differentially retarded by this packing so that they move through the column at different rates, as a result of which they exit at different but precisely spaced time intervals in relation to pulse input time. The emergence from the column of the silane "peak" or portion of the respective pulse is detected individually or is timed from the pulse input. When detected or timed, the eluent silane peak and admixed carrier gas are valved to a receiver separately from the other components, which exit before and after that peak. The silane gas fraction of the peak is then thermally decomposed, to form elemental silicon which is of electronic purity, or it may be collected and pressurized before thermal decomposition. The admixed carrier gas is not decomposed, remains a gas, and thereby is separated from the silicon. Depending on the extent to which the gas purification is carried, the product silicon may have a measured resistivity of about 1500 ohms cm or better, and can be used in fabrication of solar cells or semiconductor device without further purification.

The radial mandrel includes an improved mechanism for axially moving the cones comprising a quill adapter and scroll sleeve adapted for use with a drive shaft of standard configuration. The scroll sleeve is formed with spiral grooves which engage the cones and are operable to move the cones axially toward and away from one another as the scroll sleeve is rotated.

    摘要: Apparatus for cutting sheet molding compound in which the compound is sandwiched between two liner sheets and fed from a letoff roll onto a conveyor. The compound is conveyed past longitudinal slitters and a transverse cutting knife which cut the compound into rectangular segments of preselected size. Before a sheet reaches the area of the cutting operation, the upper liner is removed. At the area of the transverse cutting, the lower liner is diverted from the sheet compound to pass under an anvil against which the transverse cutting mechanism operates. The lower liner is then passed upwardly to return to a position underneath the sheet compound in order to support the sheet compound on the liner as it passes along the conveyor where it is picked off by the operator.

    摘要: An electronic circuit with an output that may be used, for example, to control a servo system which positions grinders of a tire grinding machine to correct tires with large cleats is disclosed. The electronic circuit is responsive to an analog electrical signal to detect whether or not the rate of change in amplitude of the analog electrical signal equals or exceeds a preselected limit. If the rate of change in amplitude of the analog electrical signal does not equal or exceed the preselected limit, the output of the electronic circuit has a characteristic that is similar to the analog electrical signal. If the rate of change in amplitude of the analog electrical signal equals or exceeds the preselected limit, the output of the electronic circuit preferably remains constant at an amplitude which the analog electrical signal attained prior to the change in amplitude at a rate equal to or in excess of the preselected limit. Broadly, the electronic circuit functions as a slope discrimination system which permits passage of an analog electrical signal if the rate of change in amplitude is below a predetermined rate but blocks passage of the analog electrical signal when the rate of change in amplitude reaches or surpasses the predetermined rate. Circuitry is preferably provided to adjustably preset the value for the preselected limit. Additional circuitry is preferably provided to facilitate automatic reset during operation.

    摘要: A self-aligning bearing construction including a ball which can be used in a pillow block mounting mode, or a flange mounting mode, or in special mounting for specific applications. A pair of generally parallel flats are formed on the ball on opposite sides of the shaft bore therein, and two cylindrical lands extend transversely around the ball, connecting the flats. As a result of a sizing step, the ball may be formed with a bead or rib running around the ball centered on the cylindrical lands and across the flats. The lands and flats provide clearance spacing so that the bead does not engage seats in a cap and a base between which it is clamped. The ball is cooperable with a series of different caps and bases for use in different mounting modes and can receive any of a series of bearing inserts to provide different bearing service.

    摘要: A magnetic conveyor system for transporting ferromagnetic cans through an immersion or electro-immersion coating bath includes a magnetic infeed conveyor for transporting the cans toward an inlet end of the coating bath, a magnetic coating conveyor for removing the cans from the infeed conveyor and transporting them through the coating bath, and a magnetic outfeed conveyor for removing the cans from the coating conveyor at an outlet end of the coating bath. The magnetic coating conveyor includes an endless conveyor belt which defines inclined inlet and outlet runs relative to a surface of the coating bath. The cans are transported on the conveyor belt with a closed bottom of each can magnetically held to the conveyor belt and an open top of each can facing outwardly from the belt. The cans are transported into the coating bath at the inlet run with the closed bottom of each can entering the bath before the open top. At the outlet run, the cans emerge from the coating bath with the closed bottom of each can leading the open top. A series of spray nozzles are mounted near the bottom of the coating bath to direct pressurized coating composition into the open top of the cans for displacing trapped air within the cans and to ensure adequate coating.

    摘要: A container washing apparatus for washing containers such as beverage cans. An elongated liquid supply pipe includes a plurality of angled fittings connected along opposite sides of the pipe. Each fitting includes quick connect and disconnect structure on its outer end for mating with like structure of a fan spray nozzle. The fan spray nozzles may be turned onto the ends of the angled fittings in a quick twisting bayonet motion to align each of the elongated fan spray patterns parallel to one another and to the longitudinal axis of the pipe. In a preferred embodiment, the container washing apparatus is used in a washing system including a liquid permeable conveyor for moving a plurality of containers, such as beverage cans, past a plurality of elongated spray pipes of the invention which are mounted adjacent upper and lower sides of the conveyor in a perpendicular orientation relative to the movement of the conveyor.
