Abstract:
A process for the fabrication of metal in shapes of long length and relatively thin cross section by deposition of molten metal on to a substrate and subsequent removal of the shaped metal article therefrom, in which a stream of gas-atomized particles of molten metal is directed on to a substrate, and caused to coalesce and form a coherent layer which is subjected while still hot to hot working, hot working being carried out either (a) before or after removal from a non-deformable substrate or (b) after removal from a deformable substrate.
Abstract:
A so-called A.F. or ''''alternating flow'''' hydraulic system comprises a power line interconnecting a generator and a pressure chamber of a receiver, a return line, control valve means at the receiver end of the system and operative to interconnect said power and return lines whereby to produce a return hydraulic flow through the return line, and control means at the generator end of the system. The control means sense the change of flow conditions consequent upon operation of the valve means and substantially preventing pressure pulses from the generator reaching at least a major length of the power line connected to the receiver.
Abstract:
In a pacer for artificial heart stimulation, the stimulating pulses produced are inhibited when the pacer detects that natural heartbeats are present. If the pacer detects electrical pulses at a frequency higher than a predetermined threshold frequency, resulting from external interference, the inhibition is suspended, and stimulating pulses are supplied. When interference is detected, the pacer may be arranged to generate stimulating pulses at a frequency higher than normal to avoid the possibility of the artificial pulses competing with natural stimulating pulses.
Abstract:
An intra-uterine contraceptive device is provided to fit the parturient uterus and gradually accommodate the involutionary process in a predetermined manner. The device is contractable in self-tracking manner by longitudinally progressive sliding engagement of one end of an elongate flexible member in the other end thereof. More particularly such a device is formed by a suitably dimensioned tapered tube.
Abstract:
A prosthetic elbow joint device comprising a first arm curved in two mutually transverse planes and formed with a first hinge part at one end thereof, and a second arm curved in one plane and formed with a second hinge part at one end thereof, the arms and hinge parts being adapted for securement by cement with the first and second arms respectively located in the ulna and humerus in intramedullary manner, the first hinge part seated on a shoulder cut in the olecranon, and the two parts disposed for mutual pivotal connection.
Abstract:
A tachogenerator for measuring the speed of a rotating shaft is described. The tachogenerator has two discs each with spaced peripheral slots; one disc is rotated at a constant speed and the other at the speed to be measured. A light beam is projected through the slots to a light sensitive device coupled to an electrical filter and a signal indicative of speed is obtained from the filter. Electrical noise in the signal from the light sensitive device is reduced by the filter. A further reduction in noise is obtained by using one or more pairs of light beams, with the beams diametrically opposed with respect to the discs. A light sensitive device is provided for each beam and these devices are coupled to the filter input. Instead the devices may be coupled to means for combining the pulse trains generated, to provide the output signal.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for determining the optical density for radiation within a predetermined range of wavelengths in which a first signal is produced related to the attenuation of radiation over a known path length in the fluid, a second signal is produced related to the attenuation of the radiation over the same path length by solid matter suspended in the fluid and the second signal is utilized to correct the first signal for the presence of the suspended solid matter in the fluid.
Abstract:
A prosthetic device comprising mutually engageable male and female components to afford pivotal rotation in a plane, the female component including a socket member having a concave bearing surface with a cross section in said plane substantially in the form of a first circular segment subtending an angle greater than 180*, and a first shaft projecting from the rear of said socket member, and the male component including a head member having a convex bearing surface with a cross section in said plane substantially in the form of a second circular segment of equal radius to said first segment, subtending an angle significantly greater than said first segment, and relieved towards one end over a segmental angle of at least similar order to that by which said first segment exceeds 180*, and a second shaft projecting from the rear of said head member.
Abstract:
THE DEWATERING TIME OF A SLUDGE OBTAINED BY ANAEROBIC DIGESTION OF A PRIMARY SEWAGE SLUDGE IS REDUCED SUBSTANTIALLY BY SUBJECTING THE DIGESTED SLUDGE TO AERATION WITH AIR OR OTHER SUITABLE OXYGEN CONTAINING GAS. TYPICALLY, AERATION IS CARRIED OUT FOR AT LEAST 4 HOURS, THE SLUDGE IS ALLOWED TO SETTLE, AND THEN DEWATERED WITHIN TWO DAYS. AERATION MAY BE CARRIED OUT BY MEANS OF DIFFUSED AIR OR, PREFERABLY, BY MECHANICAL MEANS USING A SURFACE AERATOR.
