A filter for removing oscillations and transients from vehicle driveline component angular velocity measurement signals. The filter determines, from successive measurements of angular velocity, any angular acceleration of a driveline component. Predetermined sets of unity and fractional multipliers are assigned to respective ranges of angular acceleration. Each succeeding measurement of angular velocity is estimated by adding the product of a selected modifier value and the difference between the currently sensed and the previously estimated values of angular velocity to the previously estimated value of angular velocity. Multipliers are valued and selected so that, when angular accelerations are detected, relatively large percentages of the differences between currently sensed and previously estimated values of angular velocity are added a relatively small number of times to previously estimated values of angular velocity when the differences are relatively small. Conversely, relatively small percentages of the differences between currently sensed and previously estimated values of angular velocity are added a relatively large number of times to previously estimated values of angular velocity when the differences are relatively large.

Engine crankshaft velocity is determined during each firing interval of an engine. Pairs of velocities are combined to yield acceleration measurements indicating the work done by a particular cylinder in its power stroke. A deviation of a particular acceleration value from that of neighboring values denotes a lack of power in the corresponding cylinder. The width and the phase of each velocity interval are used which provide accurate and substantially independent acceleration measures for each power stroke. Specifically, the width of each interval is preferably between about 45.degree.-180.degree. of engine rotation. Each interval has a phase in relation to its respective power stroke such that the drop in acceleration occurring in a particular power stroke causes a maximum drop in the calculated acceleration corresponding to that particular power stroke and causes a smaller but substantially equal drop in the calculated accelerations corresponding to the preceding and following power strokes. The velocity measurement intervals can be defined by position reference marking signals generated at rotational positions corresponding to a point within the power strokes where a maximum acceleration would approximately occur during a proper firing of the power stroke.

The fuel supply control pulses of an internal combustion engine may be shortened or lengthened to provide operation of the engine at a definite fuel-air ratio. When operation takes place in a leaned-out region, the engine suffers dynamic instability, resulting in rapid fluctuations of the rotational crankshaft velocity, superimposed on regular, periodic changes due to compression changes.The maximum and minimum crankshaft speeds are measured at two different locations of the angular path by passing markers in front of an inductive transducer. The output signals from this transducer are fed to a gating circuit which controls the counting modes of a digital counter which is also supplied with a clocking pulse train at a constant, high frequency. The gating circuit causes alternate upward and downward counting in the counter so that a net difference of counted pulses is formed after each two successive counting periods. This difference is stored until a particular piston of the engine has returned to the functional position it occupied during the first measurement. The measurement is repeated and the difference between the two measurements is compared. The result of this comparison forms a measure of engine roughness and is used for fuel control.

A closed loop internal combustion engine control system is provided for controlling the exhaust gas recirculation flow of an internal combustion engine so as to regulate engine roughness at a predetermined level. The control system receives an input signal indicative of the engine roughness and generates therefrom an EGR valve command signal for varying the position of a variable position EGR servo-valve so as to effect the maximum possible EGR flow compatible with a predetermined maximum level of engine roughness.
