Abstract: A method for evaluating Dry Eye Disease (“DED”) in a human or animal subject is provided. Thread thinning dynamics of a tear sample of the subject are determined using an acoustically-driven microfluidic extensional rheometry instrument. At least one physical parameter value of the tear sample is calculated based at least in part on the determined thread thinning dynamics. DED is evaluated based at least in part on the at least one calculated physical parameter value of the tear sample. A device for evaluating Dry Eye Disease (DED) in a human or animal subject is also provided. The device includes an acoustically-driven microfluidic extensional rheometry instrument and a processing device configured to evaluate DED based at least in part on the calculated at least one physical parameter value of the tear sample.

Abstract: This disclosure relates to an electrical field sensor. The sensor comprises a diamond substrate with a conducting surface providing positive charge carriers and multiple defects disposed in the diamond substrate. The sensor further comprises an optical apparatus to initialise and readout the multiple defect vacancies to determine the electrical field based on a detected fluorescence of the multiple defects. The multiple defects are located at a depth below the surface to enable the positive charge carriers to reach and positively charge the multiple defect vacancies under an influence of an external negative electric field to thereby alter the fluorescence of at least some of the multiple defects. Since the fluorescence can be measured optically, no electrical connections or amplifiers are required on the surface, which means significantly higher densities of sensors can be implemented.

Abstract: The invention relates to multicore fiber imaging, such as used in endoscopy. Methods are described for processing images captured with such systems to achieve an improved depth of field image or extract 3D information concerning the images, without requiring the addition of additional optical components. One method for generating an image from light received by an imager via a multiplicity of waveguides includes receiving a digital image containing a plurality of pixels, the digital image including a plurality of regions within it wherein each of said regions corresponds to a waveguide core. Each region includes a plurality of pixels, and a first subset of pixels within each region is defined which at least partly correlates with light having been received at a corresponding core in a first spatial arrangement, the subset including less than all of the pixels within a region. A first image is generated from the first subset of pixels from said regions, combined to form an image over the whole waveguide array. The first spatial arrangement may correspond to a measure of angular dimension of the incident light for that region. In addition to increased depth of field, the modified images provided by the invention allow 3D visualisation of objects, eg. using stereographs or depth mapping techniques.

Abstract: An imaging device described herein for capturing image data comprises an optical sensor responsive to electromagnetic radiation, wherein the sensor exhibits a photo-memory effect causing the sensor to act as a short-term memory device; an exposure control device configured to adopt a first mode, wherein electromagnetic radiation reaches the sensor and a second mode, wherein electromagnetic radiation is restricted from reaching the sensor; a processor configured to receive sensor data from the sensor, and to cause the exposure control device to selectively adopt the first mode and the second mode; and a long term memory device accessible to the processor, wherein the processor is configured to read executable instructions from the long term memory and to write sensor data to the long term memory. Data stored in the sensor acting as a short-term memory device is erasable by exposing the photo-sensor to electromagnetic radiation.

Abstract: A capsule adapted to be introduced into the digestive system and gastrointestinal (GI) tract of a mammal which consists of a capsule shaped container consisting of a wall material capable of being bio compatible with the digestive system and being adapted to protect the electronic and sensor devices contained in the capsule. The capsule contains gas composition sensors operable at several temperature points for a short duration, a temperature sensor, a micro controller, a power source and a wireless transmission device. The capsule wall incorporates gas permeable membranes adjacent said gas sensors. The microprocessor is programmed to receive data signals from the sensors and convert the signals into gas composition and concentration data and temperature data suitable for transmission to an external computing device.

The agent antagonizes disulfide bond formation between C98 and C475 of Toll-like receptor 7 (TLR7) thereby preventing TLR7 activation. Pharmaceutical compositions are also enabled herein.
