When a terminal moves from a WLAN network to a cellular network after being allocated an IP address from a PDSN of the cellular network, a tightly coupled interworking method and apparatus between the cellular network and the WLAN network set up a temporary tunnel between the PDSN and an AGW of the WLAN network, and after completion of the handoff from the WLAN network to the cellular network, inform the PDSN of the handoff completion from the terminal, thereby enabling fast seamless handoff without data loss. Compared with the conventional tightly coupled scheme, the proposed tightly coupled scheme can prevent the need for processing cellular signals in the WLAN network because there is no need to transmit cellular signals in a WLAN interval, especially between the terminal and the AGW.

Upon detecting handoff to the wireless LAN, an access terminal (AT) with a contact set up to the PDSN exchanges a data packet with a correspondent node (CN) via a tunnel between the AR and the PDSN. The AT determines a user traffic state according to a transmission/reception state of the data packet, and changes the contact connected to the AT according to the user traffic state.

A method and system for supporting Internet Protocol (IP) mobility of a Mobile Node (MN) in a mobile communication system. In the mobile communication system supporting Mobile IP (MIP) and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), MIP location registration is performed in a Home Agent (HA) through a first FA (Foreign Agent) of a first foreign network in which the MN is located. When the MN receives a SIP invite message from a Correspondent Node (CN), it sends, to the CN, a SIP response OK message in which a home address of the MN is recorded. The CN sends a packet to the home address of the MN in a state in which a SIP call of the MN is established. The number of signaling messages and a delay time associated with a handover can be reduced, because the CN sends packets only to the home address of the MN regardless of a changed location of the MN.

A method for performing data communication in a mobile communication system is disclosed. The method serves to increase channel efficiency by connecting and releasing channels in accordance with the presence/absence of control and traffic data transmitted during packet data communications. Transmission power and mobile terminal battery power are conserved by controlling outputs of a dedicated control channel and a pilot channel when data transmission is discontinued temporarily during data communications. The mobile communication system includes an active state in which user data is transmitted through a dedicated traffic channel and control messages are transmitted through a dedicated control channel. In accordance with the method, a transition is made from the active state to a first control hold state when there is no control or user data to transmit for a first preset time. In the first control hold state, the dedicated traffic channel is released while the dedicated control channel and a reverse pilot channel are maintained. A transition is made from the first control state to a second control hold state when there is no user or control data to transmit for a second preset time. In the second control hold state, which is a resource save sub-state, the transmission outputs of the dedicated control channel and reverse pilot channel are interrupted to conserve power.
