A high-data rate connector for use with consumer electronics couples digital electrical connection interfaces with optical cabling and optical transceivers. In one implementation, an electrical connection interface, such as a DVI, HDMI, or USB connection interface is electrically coupled to an optical transceiver. The optical transceiver includes an optical transmitter, such as a VCSEL, and an optical detector, such as a photodiode. The transmit fiber and the receive fiber are each positioned relatively close to the corresponding optical transmitter and optical detector without a lens. The optical transmitter and the optical detector are each optimized for the size of the optical fiber core to enable high throughput speed at relatively low cost.

The collection optics are produced in multiple pieces including a small reflective ring that surrounds the one or more light emitting diodes. The reflective ring may be positioned relative to the LEDs, using a mesa upon which the LEDs are mounted, as a lateral positioning guide. A separate upper reflector uses the reflective ring as a lateral positioning guide during assembly. The reflective ring and the upper reflector include reflective sidewalls that are approximately continuous when the reflective ring and upper reflector are assembled.

Systems, methods and devices for holographic demultiplexing of optical signals that include constituent light signals of different wavelengths. A holographic demultiplexor includes a volume hologram having holograms for redirecting the constituent light signals. A dispersion element linearly disperses the optical signal, and the individual holograms of the volume hologram spatially reflect the constituent light signals back to the dispersion member at specific angles. The volume hologram spatially reflects the constituent light signals such that they are dispersed in two dimensions. The dispersion element then reflects the two dimensionally dispersed wavelengths to a two dimensional detector array.

Systems, apparatus and methods for testing the optical quality of optical transceivers or ports. A port tester is provided that is used to quantitatively measure the optical quality of ports. A port is inserted in the port tester between a mirror assembly and a fiber assembly. A mirror included in the mirror assembly is positioned in or near a focal plane of the port lens. A test light signal is directed through the port from the optical fiber and is reflected back through the port by the mirror. The power of the reflected test signal is compared to a control signal and the comparison between these signals is indicative of the optical quality of the port. The fiber assembly is retractable such that a new port can be mounted in the port tester and tested.

Apparatus is disclosed for recovering both a data signal and a clock signal from an optical disk, in which nonconfocal detection is used to recover the data signal and confocal detection is used to recover the clock signal. The clock signal is recorded at a frequency slightly higher than the highest frequency components of the data signal, so the clock signal is not incorporated into the signal recovered by the nonconfocal data detector. The data and clock signals thereby can be recovered simultaneously from the optical disk, using just a single laser beam and objective lens.
