A method of retrieving recorded information from an optical recording medium and writing information in an optical recording medium. The method is applicable to optical recording media having different track pitches. Before reading information or recording information, a laser beam is employed to read from a control track area of an optical recording medium track pitch information including the track pitch of the medium. Then, based upon the track pitch read, the shape of the spot of the laser beam incident on the optical recording medium is adjusted so that it conforms to the track pitch determined by reading the information from the control track area.

The two-division photodetector includes first and second light receiving sections separated from each other by a division band region which receive the reflected light beam not obscured by the obscurer. A focus error signal is produced based on the output of each light receiving section. Each light receiving section has an array of tapered projections along its edge in the division band region. Alteratively, the light receiving sections have a main part with an edge coincident with an edge of the division band region, and groups of light receiving stripes extending in a direction parallel with the edges of the main part.

In the first method, a width of a mark formed by a relatively low intensity light beam between two kinds of light beam intensities used for recording information is made larger than a sum of a track land width and the maximum track offset of the light beam, thereby the mark formed by the relatively low intensity light beam covers the track land portion in its full width. Information indicating the value of the shift is selected randomly and deleted when the disc is removed from the recording apparatus. When encrypted content is downloaded and recorded on a recordable optical disc, the complete content can be recorded on the disc correctly just once.
