Abstract:
Systems and methods for authorizing a vehicle to proceed beyond an access point are disclosed. In one embodiment of the invention, a system can include an identification reader configured to obtain various identification information from one or more identification mechanisms, a biometric reader configured to obtain biometric information from one or more persons, and a computer configured to receive the identification information and the biometric information. The computer determines whether the vehicle is authorized to proceed beyond the access point using the identification information and biometric information, and transmits a signal to a control mechanism to allow the vehicle to proceed beyond the access point.
Abstract:
An emergency response personnel automated accountability system, also referred to as a Firefighter Automated Accountability System (FAAS), is provided that supports automatic tracking of and limited communications among first responders including fire, police, emergency medical service, and safety personnel. The FAAS increases situational awareness and safety of first responder personnel by automatically providing position information as well as other sensor information. Components of the FAAS integrate wireless mesh networks with positioning and communication systems to support real-time tracking of and communications with emergency response personnel. The FAAS incident awareness system provides position and time information via Global Positioning System (GPS) and/or other positioning systems, and processed data from sensors to provide enhanced communications, command and control capabilities to the first responders and incident command at the incident scene.
Abstract:
A communication accessory device is provided for use with a portable communication device like a radio. The accessory device, which couples to the standard communication device, includes a network system that automatically assembles a wireless network among other similarly equipped portable communication devices and control devices in an incident area and automatically assigns a unique identification to each portable communication device. The accessory device also includes a communication system that receives and transmits voice and data communications over the wireless network using at least one of High Frequency (HF), Very High Frequency (VHF), Super High Frequency (SHF), Ultra High Frequency (UHF)/microwave, public safety band, cellular, satellite, and Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) communications. The accessory device further includes a positioning system that automatically and periodically determines a position of the device and automatically transfers the position to control devices via the wireless network.
Abstract:
Provided herein is a method for monitoring dietary intake of food items. The method involves the steps of selecting a portion of food, weighing the portion, inputting the type and weight amount of the food into a computer, and obtaining the caloric content of the food by from a database. There is also provided an apparatus for monitoring dietary intake of food items. The apparatus includes a means for weighing a preselected portion of food, a computer for inputting the type and weight amount of the food therein, and a database operatively associated with the computer for obtaining the caloric content of the food.

Abstract:
A system of actively introducing opposite phase vibrations to reduce or cancel vibrations caused by operating a snow plow. The invention also relates to a method of actively introducing such opposite phase vibrations.
Abstract:
Systems and methods for enabling a visitor to access VR representations authored by different authors of locations in a virtual universe via a computer network are provided. A plurality of VR data sets may be stored. Each VR data set may define a VR representation of a location, as well as world wide web data and may be independently authored by a respective author different from the other authors. One or more VR data servers may be adapted to access and transmit the VR data sets, and each VR data set may be associated with a VR data server for access to the VR data set. A domain server may be adapted to access and transmit domain data comprising the location within the universe of each VR representation and the network address of the VR data server associated with the VR representation. Further, a client host may be adapted to communicate with the domain server to receive domain data representing the network address of the VR data server associated with a selected VR representation, the client host further adapted to communicate with that VR data server to access the VR data set defining the VR representation without leaving the virtual universe.

Abstract:
Systems and methods for determining a relative quantity of recyclable items with respect to a total number of items are disclosed. In one embodiment of the present invention, a computer-implemented method includes reading an identifier respectively associated with at least some of a total number of items. The computer determines a number of identifiers associated with the recyclable items. The computer also receives the total number of items, and computes the relative quantity of recyclable items by dividing the number of identifiers associated with the recyclable items by the total number of items.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a non-volatile, ferroelectric random access memory (F-RAM) device and a method for fabricating a damascene self-aligned F-RAM that allows for the formation of a ferroelectric capacitor with separated PZT layers aligned with a preexisting, three dimensional (3-D) transistor structure.
