    Abstract: A device includes a segmented polarization switch including a plurality of polarization switch segments. The device also includes a polarization selective optical element (“PSOE”) optically coupled to the segmented polarization switch and including a plurality of polarization selective segments. The device further includes a controller configured to control the polarization switch segments to operate in a switching state or a non-switching state to control optical states of the polarization selective segments.

    Abstract: A freeform varifocal optical assembly includes at least three optical modules including a first plurality of optical elements including Pancharatnam-Berry phase (PBP) lenses, polarization sensitive hologram (PSH) lenses, metamaterials, or combinations thereof. The plurality of optical elements of each optical module include a property associated with a Zernike polynomial. Each of the first and the three optical modules are configurable between a plurality of optical powers. The freeform varifocal optical assembly is configurable to output a predetermined wavefront in response to an input wavefront.

    Abstract: A switchable optical retardation device includes a switchable retardation element including liquid crystals and an electrical driver circuit. While in a first state, the switchable retardation element modifies light transmitted through the switchable retardation element by causing a phase shift of a first retardation angle. While in a second state, the switchable retardation element modifies the light transmitted through the switchable retardation element by causing a phase shift of a second retardation angle distinct from the first retardation angle. The electrical driver circuit provides a first voltage for placing the switchable retardation element in the first state and a second voltage for placing the switchable retardation element in the second state. The first voltage is greater than the second voltage, the second voltage is a non-zero voltage, and the electrical driver circuit alternatingly provides the first voltage and the second voltage with a predefined frequency.

    Abstract: A stereoscopic display device is provided for displaying a three-dimensional (3D) image as viewed by eyes consisting of a left eye and a right eye. In the display device, a single display screen, or separate left and right display screens, present a left image to the left eye but not the right eye, and present a right image to the right eye but not the left eye. A gaze distance tracker is configured to track gaze distance of the eyes. Variable-power lenses include a left variable-power lens arranged to provide eye accommodation for the left eye, and a right variable-power lens arranged to provide eye accommodation for the right eye. An electronic eye accommodation controller is configured to control the power of the variable power lenses to allow the image from the display to be focused on the retina, while the biological eye lens is accommodated to the gaze distance.

    Abstract: A gradient refractive index (GRIN) lens includes a transparent central disk and transparent annular segments, including central annular segments and peripheral annular segments. The central disk and each annular segment has a continuous optical phase profile at a design wavelength along a radial direction extending outward from a center of the central disk. An optical phase discontinuity is present at the interface between the central disk and the innermost central annular segment and at the interface between each pair of adjacent annular segments. Radial widths of the central annular segments decrease with increasing distance away from the center of the central disk. The peripheral annular segments have optical phase profiles for the design wavelength that are linear or have maximum first derivatives that are constant or become smaller with increasing distance of the peripheral annular segments away from the center of the central disk.
