In order to ensure a high level of measurement accuracy of the roll gap transmitter even in the case of horizontal displacement of the working rolls in or against the rolling direction it is proposed in accordance with the invention to carry out adjusting the movement of the roll gap transmitter (110) with respect to the working rolls in the case of a displacement in or against the rolling direction so that even in a new or displaced end position of the working rolls a suitable relative position, which is required for a high level of measurement accuracy, between roll gap transmitter and the working rolls is guaranteed.

Since the raceway grooves 2 can be rolled with high accuracy by a single working step, the working time of the raceway grooves as well as the working cost thereof can be reduced.

There is described a method of controlling a long-stroke, hydraulic operating cylinder (1), in particular a screw-down cylinder for an edging stand, where the piston (4), to which a load can be applied at both ends, and which can be locked hydraulically along its stroke (s) in various working positions, is abruptly loaded with an external force after it has been locked. To create advantageous method conditions, it is proposed that the piston (4) be locked under a hydraulic pressure chosen in dependence on the respective working position, which hydraulic pressure decreases along the stroke (s) against the direction of action of the external force.

Each member has a pair of wheels mounted so that one wheel rotates in contact with only one roll and the other wheel rotates in contact with only the other roll. The nip clearance is a function of the distance between the two members.
