The invention relates to apparatus and a method for preparing a fine oil mist, in particular to be fed into tool lubrication ducts of a CNC machine tool. The apparatus is turned ON/OFF solely using the standardized machine commands M08 (“Cooling lubricant ON”) and M09 (“Cooling lubricant OFF”). The control/regulation of the tools' aerosol supplies then will be fully automatic. It involves—contrary to known quantitative regulations—a simple regulation by means of aerosol pressure values. When starting the apparatus or following a change of tools, all aerosol pumps are operating, including, where tools exhibit cross-sectionally large boreholes, an oil over-enriching pump. At least one aerosol pump operates when regulated within a range of supply pressures. When the upper pressure value of the supply pressure range is exceeded, the pump(s) shut(s) down until the aerosol sup[ply has been exhausted and will turn ON again when the lower pressure value of the supply pressure range is crossed downward because of aerosol consumption.

The mist feed tube (5) has a double tube structure comprising an air tube (7) in which air flows, and an oil tube (6) which extends in the air tube (7) and in which the oil flows. The distal end of the oil tube (6) is positioned more inward than the distal end of the air tube (7), so that the oil mist can be fed by a simple construction.

A method and device for lubricating a workpiece-machine tool interface during a machining operation in which the temperature of lubricant atomized within a stream of air is substantially reduced. The preferred embodiment utilizes a vortex tube to accomplish the cooling and thereby provides an extremely simple device that greatly reduces the amount of heat generated in a machining operation. Reduced heat production decreases the temperatures to which both the workpiece and machine tool are subjected. Lower temperatures serve to extend the machine tool's service life while preserving the workpiece's metallurgy and consequently allows for increased machining rates.
