The invention concerns a method for the manufacture of a superconductor with a layer of the A-15 phase of the system Nb-Al-Si. According to the invention, a niobium carrier is provided with a layer about 0.5 to 5 .mu.m thick consisting of Nb.sub.3 (Al,Si), aluminum and silicon by placing it in an aluminum melt which contains up to 10 atomic percent of silicon and a small amount of niobium and is heated to 850.degree. to 1300.degree. C, and then the niobium carrier provided with this layer is annealed in an inert atmosphere for at least 0.5 seconds to form the layer of the A-15 phase.

Composite billets that function as starting stock for superconducting wire are produced by immersing an assembly of rods of a superconductor alloy or rods of a metal which is capable of forming a superconductor into a molten bath of normal material, thereby encasing the assembly within normal material, allowing the molten bath to solidify and form a rough as-cast billet and thereafter zone-melting the billet so as to remove all vestiges of shrinkage cracks, surface imperfections and internal inhomogeneities.

A method is provided for fabrication of superconducting oxides and superconducting oxide composites and for joining superconductors to other materials. A coating of a molten alloy containing the metallic elements of the oxide is applied to a substrate surface and oxidized to form the superconducting oxide. A material can be contacted to the molten alloy which is subsequently oxidized joining the material to the resulting superconducting oxide coating. Substrates of varied composition and shape can be coated or joined by this method.

A method for making metal/ceramic superconductor thick film structures including the steps of preparing a silver/superconductor ink, applying the ink to a substrate, evaporating the ink's binder, decomposing a silver compound in the residue to coat the superconductor grains, sintering the coated superconductor grains, and oxygenating the superconductor grains through the silver coating. The resultant inter-granular silver increases the critical current and mechanical strength of the superconductor.

Optionally, the electroplating steps are conducted in such a manner that a patterned precursor deposit results, to obtain a patterned superconducting deposit after oxidation.

The thin film is first formed of a superimposed structure composed of three films which contain a rare earth metal, an alkaline metal and copper respectively. Then the superimposed thin film is fired to convert to superconducting film.
