    摘要: A pair of rotary die cylinders with lands having coacting cutting edges which cut blanks from a web of material passing through the nip of the rotating dies. In cross section each land has an outer face and a pair of spaced apart side faces which are parallel to each other and perpendicular to the chord of the outer face to provide a clean cut and facilitate release of the cut blank from the cutting blades as it emerges from the nip of the dies. The die cylinders are journalled for rotation by recesses with frusto conical locating surfaces in their opposed ends. Each die cylinder is made by machining the recesses in the opposed ends of a generally cylindrical workpiece of tool steel and then utilizing the recesses to locate and orient the workpiece relative to a cutting tool to produce a cylindrical surface on the workpiece concentric with the axis of the recesses and then to machine away portions of the periphery of the cylindrical surface to form the cutting blade lands thereon. After machining is completed the cutting blade lands may be hardened by heat treating utilizing a laser beam directed onto the lands to heat them at an elevated temperature so that upon quenching they are hardened without any substantial hardening and resulting distortion of the core or body of the workpiece.

    摘要: Labelling equipment is provided for applying heat shrinkable wrap-around labels to contoured surfaces of containers. The equipment includes a label carrier having a wheel rotatable about its axis, a vacuum system coupled to the wheel to retain labels on the wheel, a feeder for directing containers individually to the wheel adjacent the periphery of the wheel to receive a label, and a drive system for receiving containers from the bottle feeder and for rolling the containers upon receiving the label from the label carrier.The container is supported on a platen having a diameter corresponding to the greatest diameter of the container so that the label depends in a skirt from the container. The container is subsequently transferred to a smaller platen and passed over a heated plenum to shrink the skirt to the contours of the container.

    摘要: A rotary cutter for a printing press directs a web between a knife cylinder and an opposed anvil cylinder. The outer surface of the knife cylinder mounts one or more knife blade assemblies each having a sandwich construction. Each assembly includes at least one and usually two blades separated by a spacer bar. The assembly also includes a perforator blade and an ejector bar located on opposite sides of the spacer bar and set in recesses formed on the sides of the spacer bar. The perforator blade has laterally spaced sets of chisel-like teeth that impale trim pieces cut by the blades. The ejector bar reciprocates radially within the assembly to remove the trim piece from the teeth. The assembly is held together by two sets of bolts that allow the location of the blades to be set independently. A set of half rings each carrying radially projecting locating dowels are nested in circumferential grooves formed in the knife cylinder. Each ring is aligned against locating pins mounted in the knife cylinder. The knife assembly preferably includes a convex alignment surface that abuts an associated dowel in a point-to-point contact to locate the blade assembly on the knife cylinder accurately and easily.

    摘要: A rotary cutter for a printing press directs a web between a knife cylinder and an opposed anvil cylinder.     摘要: A conveyor surface for carrying off separated sheets in a web welding and separating machine is displaced from a welding gap between a welding roller having a welding tool and an opposing roller in the direction of the axis of the opposing roller. As the leading edge of a thin web passes beyond the welding gap, it tends to stay close to the surface of the opposing roller until it has been borne a substantial circumferential distance past the welding gap, whereupon it separates therefrom. A guide plate bridges a space between the opposing roller and the conveyor surface to smoothly transfer the separated sheets to the conveyor surface. An elastically compressible strip on the welding roller is optionally used to improve the separation of the leading edge of the web from the welding tool and to closely press it against the opposing roller.

    摘要: Upper and lower combined cutting and anvil rolls are provided with axially-extending circumferentially-spaced grooves for receiving compression cutting blades clamped therein, with their cutting edges substantially engaging the anvil portions of the other roll. One roll is drivingly connected to the other roll by intermeshing helical gears whereby one roll can be shifted axially and thereby simultaneously shifted circumferentially relatively to the other roll in order to vary the circumferential spacing of the cutting blades of the upper and lower rolls so as to vary the lengths of the sheets cut from a web of paper emerging from a printing press by which the pages have been printed. An adjusting screw shaft engages the upper roll through a thrust bearing and is equipped with a hand wheel and lock nut wheel to shift the roll axially and lock it in position. Registering concentric annular dials between the upper axially-adjustable roll and its helical drive gear indicate the adjustment which may be obtained. A cam device on the lower roll registers with ejector bars adjacent the cutting blades to eject the trim or scrap left over when the lengths of the pages cut total less than the circumference of the roll. On both the upper and lower rolls are mounted compression cutting blades, each roll acting not only as a cutting roll but also as a rotary anvil roll for the cutting blades of the other cutting roll.
