The compositions contain at least one multi-ingredient component and have a density in excess of 650 g/liter, a content of Iron, Manganese and Copper less than 25 ppm, an Equilibrium Relative Humidity at 32.degree. C. of less than 30% and preferably a sodium sulfate content of less than 2.5% by weight.

The quaternary imine salt at relatively low concentrations enhances the activity of the precursor. A method for bleaching substrates is also provided, especially a method for cleaning fabrics.

A process for inhibiting the re-absorption of migrating dyes in the wash liquor comprises introducing into a wash liquor containing a peroxide-containing detergent, from 0.5 to 150 mg, per liter of wash liquor, of one or more manganese compounds having the formula (1), (2), (3), (4), (5), (6) or (7) as defined in the specification. The manganese compounds do not exhaust at all on to cotton, polyamide or polyester fibres so that the compounds cannot lead to fibre discoloration problems.

Novel bleach catalysts, a method for bleaching substrates using these catalysts and detergent compositions containing the catalysts are reported. The catalysts are quaternary imine salts. Substrates such as fabrics may be bleached in an aqueous solution containing these salts and a peroxygen compound.
