Abstract:
An optical system having an optical waveguide for collecting light, a receiver for receiving the light, and redirecting optics for transferring the light from the optical waveguide to the receiver. The optical system can be used for concentrating light such as in solar applications. The optical system can also be used for diffusing light in illumination applications by replacing the receiver with a light source such that the light flows in the reverse of the concentration system.
Abstract:
Methods, apparatuses and systems directed to providing location services in a wireless network. According to one implementation of the present invention, the wireless network infrastructure provides high-accuracy location information via location services to wireless clients. In one embodiment, during an advertisement phase, a location server provides a list of available location services to wireless clients via a central controller. In another embodiment, during a presentation phase, a driver of the wireless client presents the available location services to one or more applications of the wireless client. In another embodiment, during a request phase, the driver transmits a location service request to the central controller, which passes the location service request to the location server.

Abstract:
A solar concentrator having a concentrator element for collecting input light, a redirecting component with a plurality of incremental steps for receiving the light and also for redirecting the light, and a waveguide including a plurality of incremental portions enabling collection and concentration of the light onto a receiver. Other systems replace the receiver by a light source so system optics can provide illumination.
Abstract:
A system for providing remote access to a storage device (38) comprises a network (34), a workstation (10) and a remote device (32). The workstation (10) comprises a write protected device interface (in the drive unit) for receiving the storage device (38), a processor (the POD server) connected to the device interface and arranged to execute one or more services on the storage device (38) and a gateway device (the PAD) arranged to create and to manage secure private connections to and from the processor over the network. The remote device (32) comprises a network interface for connecting to the network, and a processor connected to the network interface and arranged to transmit instructions to control the execution of one or more services of the workstation (10) on the storage device (38). The system can also include a management server (FIMS) which comprises a network interface for connecting to the network, and a processor connected to the network interface and arranged to transmit to the remote device (32) access information to facilitate a network connection between the network interface of the remote device and the gateway device of the workstation.
Abstract:
In one embodiment, a method for facilitating maintaining wireless connectivity and roaming in wireless networks includes estimating a current location of the wireless client and determining a physical route and a wireless access point route based on the current location and a destination.
Abstract:
Methods, apparatuses, and systems directed to reliably providing emergency services to wireless clients. In one embodiment, a wireless client determines if an attempt to transmit an emergency message exists. If so, the wireless client determines if one or more wireless access points support expedited bandwidth capabilities. If so, the wireless client notifies one of the wireless access points that the wireless client has an expedited bandwidth request.

Abstract:
A system and method are provided in which access point (AP) devices in a wireless local area network (WLAN) are typed or configured into one of three measurement and reporting roles: Monitor-Mode AP (MMAP), Portal AP (PAP), a Border AP (BAP) or an Interior AP (IAP). APs are assigned specific link measurement requirements according to their assigned type or role. In general, MMAPs and PAPs have the greatest measurement and reporting responsibilities, BAPs have less measurement and reporting responsibilities than PAPs and IAPs have the least measurement and reporting responsibilities. The APs generate measurements that are supplied to appropriate equipment to facilitate handover decisions with respect to a dual-mode wireless client device that roams between the WLAN and another network or vice versa. As a result, link measurements are only performed by APs in locations where such measurements are necessary for handover service, thus reducing the overall processing load on the WLAN infrastructure.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for switching a mobile processing device from communicating over a wireless connection with a first base unit to a second base unit based upon latency. In accordance with this invention, the mobile processing device determines latency information for packets being transmitted over the wireless connection to and from a base unit. The latency information is compared to a threshold value. If the latency information is greater than the threshold value, the mobile processing device adjusts parameters of the wireless connection between the mobile processing device and the network.
