Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described including identifying a subject as suffering from cardiac dysfunction, congestive heart failure, reduced renal blood flow, increased renal vascular resistance, arterial hypertension, and/or kidney dysfunction, and, in response thereto, reducing blood pressure within a renal vein of the subject, by activating at least one impeller to pump blood from the renal vein into a vena cava of the subject, by the impeller rotating.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described including identifying a subject as suffering from a condition selected from the group consisting of: cardiac dysfunction, congestive heart failure, reduced renal blood flow, increased renal vascular resistance, arterial hypertension, and kidney dysfunction. In response thereto, blood pressure within a renal vein (32) of the subject is reduced, by placing a blood pump (150) inside the subject's renal vein and activating the impeller to pump blood from the renal vein into the subject's vena cava (26). Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described including inserting a catheter into a subject's body via a vein of the subject's groin. The catheter is advanced distally such that a distal end of the catheter is disposed inside the subject's renal vein. Respective stabilizing portions of the catheter stabilize the catheter by being in contact with inner walls of, respectively, an iliac vein of the subject, and a vena cava of the subject. Subsequently, a medical device is deployed inside the renal vein by retracting the distal end of the catheter, such that the distal end of the catheter is in a retracted state, in which the respective stabilizing portions of the catheter still stabilize the catheter by being in contact with the inner walls of, respectively, the subject's iliac vein and the subject's vena cava. Other applications are also described.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described including advancing a guide wire into a left ventricle of a subject and guiding a pump head of a left-ventricular assist device to the subject's left ventricle over the guidewire. The pump head is disposed in a radially-constrained configuration within a delivery catheter during the guiding. When the pump head is disposed within the subject's left ventricle, the pump-head is released from within the delivery catheter, thereby causing an impeller of the pump head to automatically assume a non-radially-constrained configuration by the impeller self-expanding. Other applications are also described.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described including a blood pump configured to be placed inside a subject's body. An impeller includes proximal and distal bushings and an axial shaft configured to pass through the proximal and distal bushings. A first one of the proximal and distal bushings is axially-fixed to the axial shaft, and a second one of the proximal and distal bushings is not axially-fixed to the axial shaft. The impeller defines a radially-constrained configuration in which the impeller is introduced into the subject's body and a non-radially-constrained configuration in which the impeller is configured to pump blood within the subject's body. The impeller changes from its radially-constrained configuration to its non-radially constrained configuration by the second bushing sliding over the axial shaft. Other applications are also described.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described including a blood pump that includes an axial shaft configured for insertion into, and rotation within, a subject's body. The blood pump also includes an impeller coupled to the axial shaft such that, as the axial shaft rotates, the impeller pumps blood of the subject. Proximal and distal radial bearings surround the axial shaft and are configured to radially stabilize the axial shaft while the axial shaft rotates. Proximal and distal sleeves, which are less flexible than the axial shaft, are disposed around the axial shaft, such that the proximal and distal sleeves contact the proximal and distal radial bearings, respectively, as the axial shaft rotates. A ratio between a length of the axial shaft and a combined length of the proximal sleeve and distal sleeve is between 2:1 and 6:1. Other applications are also described.
