Described are substituted tricyclodecane derivatives having the generic structure: ##STR1## wherein Y is a moiety having a structure selected from the group consisting of: ##STR2## wherein one of the dashed lines represents a carbon-carbon single bond and the other of the dashed lines represents a carbon-carbon double bond; wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 represent hydrogen or methyl with the proviso that one of R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 is hydrogen and the other of R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 is methyl; wherein R.sub.3 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 acyl, C.sub.3 or C.sub.4 alkyl or C.sub.3 or C.sub.4 alkenyl; wherein R.sub.4, R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 represent hydrogen or methyl with the additional proviso that one of R.sub.4, R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 is methyl and the other two of R.sub.4, R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 is hydrogen. Described is a process for preparing several substituted or unsubstituted cycloalkyl acyl alkanoates defined according to the generic structure: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 taken together complete a cycloalkyl moiety or methyl, dimethyl or trimethyl substituted cycloalkyl moiety containing five or six carbon atoms in the ring and wherein R.sub.3 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 lower alkyl and R.sub.4 is methyl or hydrogen by reacting a compound having the generic structure: ##STR2## in an aqueous silver-ion containing solution having a weakly acidic pH at elevated temperatures. The compounds so produced are useful for their organoleptic properties in consumable materials, such as foodstuffs, foodstuff flavorants, chewing gums, chewing gum flavorants, toothpastes, toothpaste flavorants, medicinal products, medicinal product flavorants, chewing tobaccos, chewing tobacco flavorants, smoking tobaccos, smoking tobacco flavorants, perfume compositions, perfumed articles, such as cationic, anionic, nonionic and zwitterionic detergents, fabric softener compositions, drier-added fabric softener articles, textile sizing agents and optical brighteners for textiles as well as colognes.

Described is a soap composition containing as a key ingredient, a mixture of compounds having a sandalwood aroma produced according to a process which comprises:(1) Reacting catechol with camphene in the presence of a Friedel Crafts Catalyst to form a first alkylation product; and then(2) Treating said first alkylation product with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, thus forming, initially, diol intermediates and then, on continuing the hydrogenation, the mixture useful in the perfume compositions of our invention.

Described is a novel perfume material and cologne containing as a key ingredient a mixture of compounds having a sandalwood aroma prepared by a process which comprises:(1) Reacting catechol with camphene in the presence of a Friedel Crafts Catalyst to form a first alkylation product; and then(2) Treating said first alkylation product with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, thus forming, initially, diol intermediates and then, on continuing the hydrogenation, the mixture useful in the perfume compositions of our invention.

Described is a novel genus of compounds defined according to the structure: ##STR1## wherein Z represents hydrogen, MgX and the moiety having the structure: ##STR2## and X represents chlor, bromo, or iodo; as well as 5-isopropyl-8-methyl-5,8-nonadien-2-one; uses of same as intermediates in a process for producing isosolanone and solanone; and organoleptic uses of 5-isopropyl-8-methyl-5,8-nonadien-2-one and 2,6-dimethyl-5-methylene-1-hepten-4-ol.The novel process of our invention involved the steps of:(i) formation of the compound having the structure: ##STR3## by means of reacting 3-methyl-2-methylenebutanal with the compound having the structure: ##STR4## (ii) acid hydrolysis of the resulting compound in order to form 2,6-dimethyl-5-methylene-1-heptene-4-ol;(iii) reaction of 2,6-dimethyl-5-methylene-1-hepten-4-ol with methyl aceto acetate in order to form 2,6-dimethyl-5-methylene-1-hepten-4-yl aceto acetate or, directly, 5-isopropyl-8-methyl-5,8-nonadiene-2-one;(iv) reacting 2,6-dimethyl-5-methylene-1-hepten-4-yl aceto acetate in the presence of an appropriate catalyst to form the 5-isopropyl-8-methyl-5,8-nonadiene-2-one; and(v) isomerizing the 5-isopropyl-8-methyl-5,8-nonadien-2-one in order to form a mixture of solanone and the isosolanone or 5-isopropyl-8-methyl-5,8-nonadiene-2-one.
