摘要: A carpenter's pencil sharpener is designed for cutting a point on a carpenter's pencil that defines a longitudinal axis and has a maximum width or dimension (MD) perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. The sharpener has a contouring portion defining a rotational axis, a pencil point contour surface and a blade. The sharpener also has a centering portion at least rotationally fixed to the contouring portion. The centering portion has a non-rotating, cylindrical, inner surface and an outer end defining an aperture for receiving the carpenter's pencil. The cylindrical surface has an inner diameter (ID) dimensioned to fit the maximum dimension (MD) of the carpenter's pencil, and is large enough to permit rotation of the carpenter's pencil within the cylindrical surface. The centering portion also has a length (L) generally parallel to the rotational axis and measured from the contouring portion to the outer end for maintaining the carpenter's pencil parallel to the axis. With this configuration, radial motion of the carpenter's pencil relative to the rotational axis is limited when the carpenter's pencil is rotated within the inner surface.

摘要: The present invention provides methods for isolating biological target materials, particularly nucleic acids, such as DNA or RNA or hybrid molecules of DNA and RNA, from other substances in a medium using silica magnetic particles. The methods of the present invention involve forming a complex of the silica magnetic particles and the biological target material in a mixture of the medium and particles, separating the complex from the mixture using external magnetic force, and eluting the biological target material from the complex. The preferred embodiments of magnetic silica particles used in the methods and kits of the present invention are capable of forming a complex with at least 2 μg of biological target material per milligram of particle, and of releasing at least 60% of the material from the complex in the elution step of the method. The methods of the present invention produce isolated biological target material which is substantially free of contaminants, such as metals or macromolecular substances, which can interfere with further processing or analysis, if present.

摘要: A novel air intake system which is suitable for at least substantially reducing the inadvertent intake of water with ambient air into an air compressor or other operational component of a fuel cell or internal combustion engine is disclosed. The air intake system typically includes an elongated air flow conduit having a downwardly-angled air inlet arm that is typically fitted with multiple louver elements and a splash shield to deflect entering water downwardly into a drain or gullet chamber. The air intake system typically further includes a mechanism for gravity-mediated draining of water from the air flow conduit to prevent entering water from being drawn into the air compressor or other component.

摘要: A vehicle includes a wheel suspension device on a right side and a wheel suspension device on a left side, with the right and left side wheel suspension devices being connected to each other through a rear frame mounted on a body frame. The right and left side wheel suspension devices include a lower arm supported at an inner end of the rear frame so as to extend outward and so as to be pivotally movable in a vertical direction. The right and left side wheel suspension devices also include an upper arm connected to the outer end of the lower arm through a wheel-supporting knuckle and so as to extend outward from the knuckle. The wheel suspension devices are provided with a rear cushion unit connected at one end to the swinging side end of one of the lower and upper arm members. At least one of the inner end of the upper arm and the other end of the rear cushion unit is supported on the rear frame so as to be pivotally movable.

摘要: A disk drive has a servo controller that compensates for repeatable runout between the drive's data-transducing head and a data-storage disk disposed within the drive. The drive incorporates an improved runout-compensation technique by which a runout-error correction is applied to a plurality of locations on the disk without a need to store position-error data corresponding to each location. The drive also incorporates an improved runout-compensation technique by which the runout-error correction is optimally matched to the response characteristics of the drive's actuator mechanism. This optimal matching is accomplished by setting the anticipation interval for the correction in non-whole-sector increments, and calculating a to-be applied runout-error correction. Alternatively, the drive is equipped with a digital filter that calculates a runout-error correction based on a model of the actuator mechanism incorporated into the filter.

摘要: An improved fusing apparatus for fixing or fusing images on print media is disclosed wherein a relatively small pressure applying surface, such as the surface of a rotatable pressure wheel, is lubricated with a lubricating medium such as silicone oil, and engages the printed image to apply pressure and fuse the image to the image receiving substrate. The fusing apparatus is mounted for reciprocal back and forth movement across the printed image on the image receiving substrate or medium to fuse the image into the substrate and flatten or smooth the upper exposed surface of the ink image. The pressure wheel is passed in multiple overlapping passes over the printed image to uniformly fuse the image into the media.
