The predetermined schedule can include monitoring the HS-SCCHs in the same timeslot, either a timeslot just for the HS-SCCHs or a timeslot utilized by another channel.

A collision may be avoided by allocating a first set of subframes to a backhaul link transmission, and allocating a second set of subframes to an access link transmission. In one example, the second set of subframes may be a non-overlapping set of subframes with respect to the first set of subframes. In a second embodiment, a collision may be avoided by receiving a data transmission from an evolved Node-B (eNB) and transmitting an uplink (UL) grant to a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) and a first acknowledgement (ACK) to the eNB. The transmission may be in response to the received data transmission. The RN may avoid a collision by further transmitting an automatic ACK to the WTRU and transmitting a second UL grant to the WTRU. In a third embodiment, a collision between an access link transmission and a backhaul link transmission may be avoided by detecting a collision and determining an interface priority based on a collision occurrence type.

A method for performing outer loop power control in wireless communications is disclosed. A channel quality indicator (CQI) message is transmitted by a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU). The WTRU receives a power control command, the power control command being derived by: decoding the CQI message; computing a decision metric value for each symbol in the CQI message; determining whether the CQI message is erroneous; and counting a number of erroneous CQI messages, wherein the power control command is based on whether the number of erroneous CQI messages exceeds a threshold. An uplink transmission power of the WTRU is adjusted based on the power control command.

Wireless mobile unit communication initiation is provided in a radio network that has a plurality of base stations, each providing wireless communication services in a respective geographic coverage. The wireless communication is established by first transmitting an omnidirectional sounding pulse from a wireless mobile unit. Information related to the detected sounding pulse is communicated to an interface by each base station detecting the sounding pulse. One of the base stations that detected the sounding pulse is selected for mobile unit communication based on the communicated information and directs a communication beam to the mobile unit to establish wireless communication. Alternatively, one or more of the base stations that detected the sounding pulse direct a communication beam to the mobile unit and the mobile unit selects unit the base station with which it is to establish wireless communication. Preferably, smart antennas, including directional beamforming capability, are employed by the base stations.
