Abstract: Detecting skew and determining skew angle using the front of a document by determining background-to-document transitions. Incoming scanlines are interval sampled in the fast scan direction every nth pixel. The samples are collected and organized into a two dimension array comprised of scanline based rows and interval based columns. The collected and organized samples are analyzed by intervals to determine a scanline (row) where a specified sampling condition exceeds predetermined threshold. The corresponding row-interval point forms a background-to-medium transition point of the edge of a document. When two or more background-to-medium transition points are found from different intervals the skew angle can be determined using linear regression.

Abstract: A method for generating a background statistics that distinguishes between gray level information from document areas and non-document areas. The method includes determining a full page background statistics from selected pixels within a scanned area; determining a sub-region background statistics from selected pixels within a sub-region of the scanned area; determining if the sub-region background statistics corresponds to image data from a non-document area; determining if the full page background statistics is corrupted; and generating a validated full page background statistics if the full page background statistics is corrupted.

Abstract: A first aspect of the of the present invention is a system and method for classifying an input document based a segmentation tag statistics. The method includes receiving first pass segmentation tags for a plurality of pixels within a block of image data; determining an image type for the block of image data using statistics compiled from the first pass segmentation tags; and generating rendering tags for pixels within the block of image data as function of second pass segmentation tags and the image type. Beneficially, the image type identified for the block of image data is used to optimize the rendering process.

Abstract: Some embodiments are directed to a method of automatically modifying a scanned image of a page from an input document comprising a plurality of pages. First, scanned images of the plurality of pages are obtained. Next, a user selection for an output orientation of an output document and optionally value of N for an N-Up operation is received. Thereafter, input orientation of each scanned image is detected. Then, the scanned image is rotated, based on the detected input orientation, the output orientation and the value of ‘N’ if provided by the user. Next, the rotated scanned image content is resized so that it fits on a page. Finally, the output document is prepared that includes pages in the output orientation.

Abstract: Disclosed is a processor-implemented method for processing image data of a document using an apparatus. The processor determines pixel classifications and counts for each classification, classifies the image, selects a billing tier for which to bill the image, determines counts of pixels for marking to output the image (e.g., in device dependent space), and then can adjust from the selected billing tier to a different billing tier based on the image classification (e.g., and/or using determined counts of pixels for each classification and determined counts of pixels for marking). Counts of pixels can be adjusted using an offset, or calculated using a combination of the determined counts (e.g., combining counts from both independent and dependent spaces). By adjusting the tier at which to bill data, more accurate billing can be implemented for documents with contone or grayscale image data, for example, with greater customer satisfaction.

Abstract: A method for detecting and growing isolated dots in a document image having a plurality of pixels is provided. The method includes isolating the pixels of the image to form a plurality of windows, each window having a target pixel; detecting an isolated dot in the received image; identifying a dot growth factor to grow the detected isolated dot in the received image; using the dot growth factor to identify tiered pixel patterns from a plurality of predefined, tiered pixel patterns, wherein each of the tiered pixel patterns having a predetermined dot growth factor; comparing the pixels within each window to the pixel patterns within the identified tier to identify a match between the pixels within the window and at least one of the pixel patterns; and changing a pixel value of the target pixel, when a match is identified, to grow the isolated dot by the dot growth factor.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are a method and an image processing apparatus implementing the method for determining a billing structure for outputting documents. The method determines if pixels of image data of a document in device independent space are neutral (e.g., gray) or non-neutral (e.g., color), and, based on at least the determined neutral pixels in device independent space, determines a billable pixel count of color pixels in the image data. In one example, the determined billable pixel count of color pixels is based on at least both an estimated color count in device independent space and a determined pixel count in device dependent space. In another, pixels are tagged based on the neutral and/or non-neutral determination in device independent space, and, if the tag indicates that a selected pixel is color in device dependent space, the selected pixel is counted for the billable pixel count.
