摘要: A polymer dispersed liquid crystal display device includes a top substrate and a bottom substrate. First electrodes are provided on the top substrate and second electrodes are provided on the bottom substrate. Orientation are provided on the top and the bottom substrates. The orientation films are respectively rubbed in predetermined directions. A polymer material, a liquid crystal material and a predetermined amount of a chiral agent are interposed between the top and bottom substrates. The polymer material is separated from the liquid crystal material through irradiation by ultraviolet rays. The liquid crystal material and polymer material have a mutually orientated and dispersed structure. The liquid crystal material has a predetermined twisting angle in a predetermined twist direction. As a result, light is scattered when substantially normal to the liquid crystal display device and the surface of the top substrate. Thus, a polymer dispersed liquid crystal display device is obtained that is particularly bright in a specific direction.

摘要: A method for measuring a concentration of an absorptive constituent in a scattering medium comprises the steps of emitting of light having two or more predetermined wavelengths; making said light incident at a light incidence position into said scattering medium; detecting said light at one or more photodetection points to acquire one or more photodetection signals; detecting light quantities and average flight pathlengths for said respective wavelengths of light based on said signals; and obtaining a concentration of said absorptive constituent by arithmetic processing using said light quantities and average flight pathlengths based on a predetermined relationship. The method permits absolute-value measurement of the concentration of the absorptive constituent inside the scattering medium having various exterior shapes.

摘要: A processing unit notifies a drive unit of a designated number N (=1, 2, . . . ). The drive unit supplies a drive signal of a frequency f.sub.0 to a target measurement device, and supplies a modulation signal of a frequency N.multidot.f.sub.0 +.DELTA.f to an optical modulator. In this state, a continuous emission light beam is emitted from a light source, incident on an E-O probe sequentially through a polarizer and a first optical system, influenced by a periodical voltage waveform generated at a target measurement portion at a fundamental period 1/f.sub.0 to modulate the polarized state, and output from the E-O probe. The optical signal whose polarized state is modulated is input to the optical modulator and modulated. Thereafter, a polarization direction is selected by an optical selection unit, and the optical signal is input to an photodetector 510 and heterodyne-detected. The processing unit reproduces the waveform of the voltage signal generated at the target measurement portion by calculation of Fourier transform on the basis of the obtained photodetection signal and displays the waveform.

摘要: Modulated light from a light source is incident on the surface of a scattering medium, and light passing through this scattering medium is externally detected. A signal of a predetermined frequency component is extracted from this detection signal to detect a photon density wave propagating in the scattering medium. A signal extracted to correspond to this photon density wave is compared with the signal of the predetermined frequency component constituting the original incident modulated light to detect a predetermined quantitatively measurable parameter such as a phase difference at a detection point. This parameter has a specific relationship with the absorption coefficient by an absorptive constituent in the scattering medium as being derived from the photon diffusion theory, so that the predetermined parameter is appropriately arithmetically processed to obtain various kinds of absorption information (including the linear integration value of the absorption coefficient in the scattering medium and the concentration of a specific material) associated with absorption in the scattering medium.
