Abstract: This disclosure relates to techniques for a wireless device to autonomously perform certain cell measurements in a wireless communication system. A wireless device may establish a wireless link with a cellular base station. The wireless link may be established according to a first radio access technology. The wireless device may determine whether at least one cell that operates according to a second radio access technology is available at the current location of the wireless device based on information stored by the wireless device. If at least one cell that operates according to the second radio access technology is available, the wireless device may perform one or more cell measurements on a cell that operates according to the second radio access technology.

Abstract: A self-organizing device may include a recovery control module which may monitor different events from various different domains, for example from different layers of the software stack, associated with wireless communications of the device. Upon identifying a specific condition based on the monitored information, the device may execute a corresponding auto-recovery mechanism to mitigate adverse effects of the condition experienced by the device. Devices may provide monitored information to servers, e.g. to cloud servers, which may use expert systems to analyze the information collected from multiple devices, for example from globally dispersed devices, and may define mitigation action responses corresponding to specific scenarios or conditions that include device-specific considerations. The mitigating action responses may be deployed to the devices by the servers as expert system rules in the form of uncompiled code or hot patch code that the devices may later use to implement the necessary mitigation actions as warranted.

Abstract: A system and method for operation of a user equipment (UE) to determine a cellular network bottleneck in a downlink channel, and an apparatus for use in a UE for determining the same. A UE may determine a burst of network traffic from network traffic received from the cellular network during a series of transmission time intervals. The UE may analyze resource allocations to the UE during the burst to determine an extent to which the cellular network is busy. The UE may determine that the cellular network is experiencing a bottleneck based at least in part on the analysis of the resource allocations to the UE in the burst.

Abstract: Embodiments for performing a fast return to Wi-Fi following completion of a cellular voice call are provided. These embodiments include detecting that a device has switched from communicating over a Wi-Fi interface to communicating over a cellular interface; determining the earliest time that the device can switch back to Wi-Fi; and instituting the switch. In some embodiments, the process of performing a fast return to Wi-Fi is carried out by devices having small form factors, such as smartwatches and other wearables, which may be susceptible to coexistence and peak power problems. The fast return to Wi-Fi embodiments disclosed herein allow a device to perform a voice call over a cellular interface when Wi-Fi calling is not available, and switch over to a Wi-Fi interface immediately upon completion of the voice call in order to conserve battery life, achieve higher data speeds, and avoid high costs associated with cellular data transmissions.

Abstract: Signal load due to ping-pong of a wireless device between a wireless local area network (WLAN) access point (AP) and a cellular base station is reduced. The wireless device operates in a geographic region with signal coverage from more than one radio access technology (RAT) type of cellular serving cell as well as potentially coverage from the AP. An IP address used for incoming calls and the RAT serving the wireless device are part of a context. In some instances, when the wireless device changes context from the AP to a cellular base station and back to the AP (“ping-pong”), the context changes and a new IP address may be obtained via network signaling. Ping-pong is reduced by determining a quality estimate of cellular signals that relies on cell measurements from a mix of cellular base stations, where the mix of cellular base stations supports different cellular RATs.

Abstract: This disclosure relates to wireless connection management for an accessory device. A companion device and the accessory device may establish a wireless link. The companion device may associate with a Wi-Fi access point. The companion device may determine whether the Wi-Fi access point supports access by the accessory device to a wide area network. The companion device may determine whether to provide association information for the Wi-Fi access point to the accessory device based at least in part on whether the Wi-Fi access point supports access by the accessory device to the wide area network. The companion device may monitor whether the Wi-Fi access point continues to support access by the accessory device to the wide area network, and may indicate to the accessory device to disassociate with the Wi-Fi access point if the Wi-Fi access point no longer supports access by the accessory device to the wide area network.

Abstract: A device, system and method for a user equipment (UE) to opportunistically utilize the wireless capabilities of a paired device. The UE is configured to establish a first cellular network connection based on a first subscription, a second cellular network connection based on a second subscription and a connection to a further UE based on a short-range communication protocol. The UE identifies a predetermined condition and transmits an indication to the further UE based on the predetermined condition. The further UE establishes a further cellular network connection in response to the indication and the further cellular network connection is based on one of the first subscription or the second subscription. The UE then declares no service for one of the first cellular network connection or the second cellular network connection based on the further cellular network connection.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus to enable and disable cellular services for one or more cellular capable secondary wireless devices associated with a primary wireless device are disclosed. The primary wireless device, in response to detecting a status change of an in use state of a cellular capable secondary wireless device can provide a notification to a network server of a wireless network to disable cellular wireless services for previously enabled cellular capable secondary wireless devices and to enable cellular wireless services for the cellular capable secondary wireless device. Control of cellular wireless services for cellular capable secondary wireless devices can be based on a combination of registration for services, activation and deactivation of eSIMs on the cellular capable secondary wireless devices, and/or changes to eSIM states or contexts maintained by the network server.

Abstract: Some embodiments relate to a smart phone or a wearable device, such as a smart watch, and associated methods for enabling the UE device to switch from a normal mode to/from a voice-to-text mode and/or a text-to-voice mode. The transition to/from voice-to-text mode and/or text-to-voice mode may be conducted automatically or through manual selection by the user of the UE. These transitions (or the presentation of a manual selection option) may be determined based on an ambient noise measurement performed by the UE.
