Abstract:
An apparatus and method for performing remote financial transactions over an interactive network using a user operated payment module such as an initialized remote control device. The secure remote financial transaction system uses password security as well as a secure method for selecting and implementing personal passwords.
Abstract:
A computer system having a core logic chipset that functions as a bridge between an Accelerated Graphics Port ("AGP") bus device such as a graphics controller, and a host processor and computer system memory wherein a Graphics Address Remapping Table ("GART table") is used by the core logic chipset to remap virtual memory addresses used by the AGP graphics controller into physical memory addresses that reside in the computer system memory. The GART table enables the AGP graphics controller to work in contiguous virtual memory address space, but actually use non-contiguous blocks or pages of physical system memory to store textures, command lists and the like. The GART table is made up of a plurality of entries, each entry comprising an address pointer to a base address of a page of graphics data in memory, and feature flags that may be used to customize the associated page. One of the feature flags is used as a Present Bit for a corresponding memory page. When the feature flag Present Bit is set, the memory page has been reserved in the physical memory for graphics data and an address translation may be carried out. When the feature flag Present Bit is clear, the memory page has not been reserved for graphics data in the physical memory and a determination must then be made whether to perform the translation or generate an error signal to the computer processor.
Abstract:
A computer system has a housing and a central processing unit located inside the housing. The computer system also has a peripheral unit mounted in and removable from the housing and a communication port connector exposed on the outside of the housing for connection of and communication with external devices. The computer system has a dedicated communication link in the housing for communication with the peripheral unit. The computer system also has a device for connecting the peripheral unit to the port connector when the peripheral unit is removed from the housing and circuitry for coupling the dedicated communications link to the port connector when the peripheral unit is connected to the communication port connector. The computer system has a device for holding a portable disk drive constructed for insertion into an internal drive bay of a computer unit having a shell for covering and protecting the disk drive. The device has a cable assembly including a parallel port connector for connecting to the computer unit and a non-parallel port connector for connecting to a connector of the disk drive.
Abstract:
A self-contained liquid cooled heat sink system disposed in a computer has a plurality of socket portions through which a cooling liquid is pumped. Operating heat from a plurality of heat-generating computer components, representatively circuit board-mounted processor chips, is efficiently transferred to the heat sink system by heat pipe modules associated with the heat-generating components. Each module includes (1) an evaporator plate held in thermal contact with its associated component, (2) a condenser plate removably plugged into one of the sockets and in a heat transfer relationship therewith, and (3) a plurality of thermosyphoning type heat pipes interconnected between the evaporator and condenser plates. The use of the heat pipe modules permits rapid and easy pull-away electrical and cooling system disconnection for each processor board as well as providing for effective cooling of the processors without the necessity of forcing a flow of air across them.
Abstract:
A fast boot computer which has three user-selectable modes of performing POST operations. The user can select full POST or quick POST be performed, as in conventional computers. However, he can also select an intermediate mode, wherein the full POST is performed if and only if a given number of days (as programmed by the user) have elapsed since the last full POST operation. This permits users to set their own trade-off between fast boot operation and maximum reliability.
Abstract:
A computer system and method for allowing access to system partitions while an operating system is operational are disclosed. The system partitions are mounted by the operating system as logical drives so that the system partitions can be accessed as any other logical drive. In one embodiment, a method for accessing a special partition on at least one of a plurality of physical disks associated with a computer system running an operating system includes the operations of identifying a designated disk from the plurality of physical disks, each of the physical disks having a partition table associated therewith, and determining whether there is a special partition on the designated disk. The method further includes identifying the partition table associated with the designated disk when it is determined that the special partition is on the designated disk, and modifying a partition type in the partition table associated with the designated disk when it is determined that the special partition is on the designated disk.
Abstract:
An apparatus is provided for coupling a printed circuit board within a printed circuit board cage. The apparatus includes a first portion coupled to the printed circuit board cage. A second portion is rotatably coupled to the printed circuit board, and includes a cam surface formed on a first end portion thereof. The cam surface is engageable with an interior surface of a bore in the first portion to urge the second portion and the printed circuit board from a first position to a second position. The second portion also includes a latch formed on a second end portion thereof. The latch is engageable with a corresponding latch on the printed circuit board in response to the second portion being located in the second position.
Abstract:
A system for automatically electrically connecting electronic components, such as an input/output board and a power supply, with a motherboard includes attaching in a tray with electronic components with a frame. In one embodiment, a tray is pivotably attached to a computer housing frame and a connector extends from the under side of the tray. As the tray is pivoted about its axis, the connector is engaged or disengaged from a connector fixedly mounted on the motherboard. The connector on the motherboard has a flexible funneled opening to facilitate insertion of the pivoting connector. In another embodiment, a tray with electronic components can be quickly disconnected from the motherboard by lifting the tray straight up guided by frame tracks. By lifting the tray, a series of leads mounted on the tray are disengaged from the slot connector mounted on the motherboard. Advantageously, a method for disconnecting electronic components from a motherboard in a computer frame is disclosed.
Abstract:
A circuit for selectively performing big-endian/little-endian data format conversion based on whether instructions or data are being transferred. The data and instructions are allocated to different regions in memory so that the big-endian/little-endian conversion is based on the source or destination address of the requested operation. Registers are provided to define a lower bound address and an upper bound address. In addition, a separate register is provided which indicates whether the data is stored between the lower bound and upper bound addresses or outside the lower bound and upper bound addresses. The registers are write addressable through the PCI configuration space, the memory space, and the I/O space, which allows the values in the registers to be changed dynamically during computer system operation.
