Various embodiments of flexible plastic tubing are disclosed for connection to an endoscopic instrument having suction, irrigation and electrocautery capabilities, with the electrocautery capability requiring connection to an electrical wire. Generally, the tubing is an integral, extruded flexible plastic tube having a first suction portion with a first interior cylindrical passageway, a second irrigation portion with a second interior cylindrical passageway, and a third portion with a third passageway for the electrical wire. The third portion joins the other portions. The third portion has a substantially cylindrical interior passageway with first and second flexible lips defining a peripheral opening which is narrower than the electrical wire such that the electrical wire is inserted past the lips and held in the passageway and is removable from the passageway.

A probe for use with an endoscopic suction-irrigation instrument is disclosed. The endoscopic suction-irrigation instrument has a cannula, a fluid chamber having a proximal opening, a seal at the proximal opening, an irrigation port and a suction port, with the distal end of the fluid chamber communicating with the cannula, and the proximal end of the fluid chamber having a substantially cylindrical portion between the irrigation and suction ports. The probe of the invention has a proximal cylindrical portion, a middle portion, and a hollow distal portion. The proximal cylindrical portion has an outer surface which extends through and contacts the seal such that the proximal end of said fluid chamber is sealed. The middle portion extends through the substantially cylindrical portion of the fluid chamber and creates an annulus therebetween. The middle portion has an internal passageway with lateral openings. The passageway is in fluid communication with the hollow distal portion of the probe, while the lateral openings are in fluid communication with the annulus. O-rings around the middle portion divide the annulus into two or more sections such that the irrigation and suction ports are separated. Different probe embodiments permit suction through an annulus and irrigation through the probe and vice versa.

The pump develops pulsatile flow and its operation is controlled by a pressure regulator that regulates the pressure of air applied to the pump. The system enables disablement of the pumping function of the pump while permitting gravity flow of irrigation liquid to the body cavity. The pump and associated tubing is inexpensive and adapted for one-time, disposable use.

Ocular perfusion during intraocular surgery of the anterior or posterior ocular cavity is optimized through the method of using a gas pump having a discernible and controllable output pressure to pressurize a reservoir of liquid infusate, which is supplied under pressure to a surgical infusion instrument for perfusion of the selected ocular chamber (Gas Forced Liquid Infusion, GFLI). The infusate selection and the infusate pressure can be controlled with a high degree of accuracy and both can be rapidly varied by audible command. Preferentially a human sensible indication of pressure is constantly available at the gas pump.

Apparatus for aspirating and irrigating the rumen of a cow includes a nozzle connected to one end of a flexible tube and adapted to be slid down the cow's throat and inserted into the rumen. The other end of the tube is connected to a container which is adapted to be placed in a vacuumized condition by a hand-operated suction pump. When the pump is operated, toxic liquid and food in the cow's rumen is sucked into the nozzle, through the tube and into the container. A second tube is located in the first tube and is adapted to eject a spray of water for cleaning the nozzle and for irrigating the rumen. The water is contained in a tank which may be pressurized by compressed air at a veterinarian's office.

A sanitary, disposable, gastric lavage closed system is disclosed that quickly and effectively flushes material from a patient's stomach. The system includes an elevated, plastic reservoir bag connected through a feed line having a specified bore range, to a T-connection. A gastric tube is fitted to the T-connection and is adapted for insertion into the patient's stomach. A fixed volume of liquid from the reservoir bag is admitted to the patient by pump or by hand control of the feed line over a short, measured period of time.Material in the patient's stomach is then quickly removed into a disposable container that forms a closed system with the rest of the components.An injection syringe may be employed to inject treatment materials into the stomach, remove test samples, and maintain the system free of clogged material.An attachment for colonic irrigation and enemas may be employed to replace and/or by-pass the gastric tube.
