Abstract: A piston assembly including a piston body pivotally connected to a connecting rod by a wrist pin. The wrist pin includes a sealed cavity therein partially filled with a heat transfer medium. The heat transfer medium may be composed of a fusible alloy. The sealed cavity may be comprised of discrete compartments. The wrist pin may be integrated with the connecting rod and share a conjoined sealed cavity therewith so that heat transfer medium can draw heat effectively away from the piston body.

Abstract: A piston for an internal combustion engine has a body including an upper combustion wall having an upper combustion surface; cylindrical outer wall with a ring belt region adjacent the upper combustion surface, and a closed annular cooling gallery located in radial alignment with the ring belt region. A cooling medium is contained in the cooling gallery. The cooling gallery has an inner surface including a radially outermost portion extending along the ring belt region. The outermost portion converges from the upper combustion wall toward a longitudinal central axis. During reciprocating motion of the piston, the cooling medium flows and remains in contact with the cooling gallery walls, thereby maximizing the capacity for heat to be transferred from the upper combustion wall to the contained cooling medium and from the cooling medium to the piston body, ring belt region and ultimately to the engine cooling system.

Abstract: A method for processing a constructed, liquid-cooled piston of an internal combustion engine, the piston including an upper piston part and a lower piston part, which are supported by a joining plane and are connected to each other in a bonded manner. An electrochemical method, such as electrochemical machining, is used to produce a passage opening or a hole in the piston. By means of the method, material is selectively removed after the completion of the upper part piston, the lower piston part, or the piston after the two piston parts have been joined. The electrochemical machining allows an arbitrarily geometrically designed topography having at least one passage opening, a hollow, or an oil pocket in cooling areas or non-cooling areas to be created on the piston.

Abstract: The invention relates to a lightweight piston comprising heat pipes. The aim of the invention is to simplify the structure of such a piston while at the same time allowing for an improved heat dissipation from the piston areas subject to heat load while avoiding thermal stress. For this purpose, a plurality of liquid-filled heat pipes each having an evaporator and a condenser end is used, whereby the evaporator end is configured by short pipe sections that are oriented in the thickness at bottom towards the focal point and that are interlinked by means of a composite heat pipe extending in parallel to the piston head. Abstract: A free piston engine is configured with a pair of opposed engine cylinders located on opposite sides of a fluid pumping assembly. An inner piston assembly includes a pair of inner pistons, one each operatively located in a respective one of the engine cylinders, with a push rod connected between the inner pistons. The push rod extends through an inner pumping chamber in the fluid pumping assembly and forms a fluid plunger within this chamber. An outer piston assembly includes a pair of outer pistons, one each operatively located in a respective one of the engine cylinders, with at least one pull rod connected between the outer pistons. The pull rod extends through an outer pumping chamber in the fluid pumping assembly and forms a fluid plunger within this chamber. The movement of the inner and outer piston assemblies during engine operation will cause the fluid plungers to pump fluid from a low pressure container into a high pressure chamber as a means of storing the energy output from the engine. Alternatively, the piston assemblies may drive a linear alternator. At least one of the pistons includes one or more generally axially extending bores partially filled with a sodium compound. As the piston reciprocates, the sodium moves back and forth in each cooling bore, thereby better distributing heat in the piston.
