    摘要: A shape memory alloy wire actuator includes a first body member, a second body member and a strand of shape memory alloy wire. The first body member and the second body member extend along a longitudinal axis and are slidably engageable with one another along the longitudinal axis. The first and second body members move in a linear, coaxial fashion relative to one another between an extended state and a contracted state. The first and second body members are resiliently biased away from one another by a spring. The strand of shape memory alloy wire interconnects the first and second body members in a serpentine manner. When the shape memory alloy wire is energized, such as by an electrical current, the shape memory alloy wire shortens causing the first body member and the second body member to move from the extended state to the contracted state. When the shape memory alloy wire is de-energized, i.e., the electrical current is shut off, the shape memory alloy wire lengthens causing the first body member and the second body member move from the contracted state to the extended state under the force of the spring.

    摘要: The present invention provides a bistable switch using a shape memory alloy, and a method for manufacturing the same. More specifically, the bistable switch includes a substrate having at least one power source; a flexible sheet having a first distal end attached to the substrate; a bridge contact formed at a second and opposite distal end of the flexible sheet; and at least one heat activated element connected to a first surface of the flexible sheet and between the second distal end and the power source. During operation, current from the power source passing through the heat activated element to indirectly bend the flexible sheet and short the signal contacts on the substrate with a sustainable force.

    摘要: A switch structure having a base surface; a first high density interconnect (HDI) plastic interconnect layer overlying the base surface layer; a cavity within the HDI plastic interconnect layer; at least one patterned shape memory alloy (SMA) layer overlying the HDI plastic interconnect layer and the cavity, and at least one patterned conductive layer over the at least one patterned SMA layer; a fixed contact pad within the cavity and attached to the base surface and a movable contact pad attached to a portion of the first patterned SMA layer within the cavity such that when the first and second patterned SMA layers and the first and second patterned metallized layers are in a first stable position, the movable contact pad touches the fixed contact pad, thereby providing an electrical connection and forming a closed switch. The structure has a second stable position in which the SMA and metallized layers are flexed away from the cavity so that the contact pads are not in contact and form an open switch.

    摘要: An overload relay including a thermal actuator heated by a control circuit is disclosed herein. The overload relay includes a contactor having a pair of contacts for interrupting the application of power from one or more power conductors to a load such as a motor. The relay also includes current transformers associated with each power conductor configured to produce signals representative of the electrical current in the power conductor. The control circuit is coupled to the current transformers and monitors the current signals when the contacts of the contactor are closed. In response to the current signals exceeding predetermined limits, the control circuit applies a heating current to the thermal actuator. In response to the heating current, the thermal actuator opens a switch which controls the application of power to the solenoid of the contactor.

    摘要: An electromagnetic relay comprises a force transmitting member for displacing a movable contact point member as an armature moves, to come in contact with a fixed contact point member. A pressing portion of the force transmitting member which is in contact with the movable contact point member is formed of a shape memory material restoring a previously memorized shape at or above a predetermined temperature. The fixed contact point and the movable contact point are abraded resulted from the long-term use of the electromagnetic relay, thereby reducing contact pressure between the two contact points and correspondingly increasing contact resistance, so that the contact points overheats. While the pressing portion of the force transmitting member overheats corresponding thereto, it changes into a predetermined shape by exerting a shape memory effect at or above a predetermined temperature to increase the contact pressure between the movable contact point member and the fixed contact point member, thereby eliminating the overheating between the contact points.

    摘要: A detector array assembly which provides for the closing at operating temperature of normally open contacts between individual sensor contact mesas and readout pads of the respective detector and readout chips comprising a detector array assembly. One or more shape memory separator elements are used in conjunction with one or more biasing springs to control the spacing of the contacts. The force of the biasing spring becomes the dominant force as the apparatus is cooled down to near operating temperature, thus moving the chips closer together and establishing reliable electrical connection between the opposed sets of contacts. At temperatures near and above the normal operating temperature of 77 degrees K., the shape memory separator element provides the dominant force and drives the chips apart to open the contacts.

The shape memory alloy element in one of the martensitic and austenitic conditions cooperates with the resilient means to elastically deform the flexure arm from an undeformed position to a deformed position. The shape memory alloy element in the other of the martensitic and austenitic conditions cooperates with the resilient means to both move away from the fexure arm, thereby allowing the flexure arm to return towards its undeformed position. It is most preferred that when the resilient means moves away from the flexure arm, the flexure arm and the resilient means are not in contact. This allows the flexure arm to return to its completely undeformed position.
