The sending of an available bandwidth message for a given link is triggered by a change in the number of time slots available on that link if that change results in a change in the number of circuit bandwidths that can be accommodated by that link for a newly provisioned circuit.

An illustrative intelligent network and method for providing voice telephony over Asynchronous Transfer Mode (“ATM”) and private address translation are provided that can provide significant advantages. The method includes generating an input ATM setup message at the calling party CPE that includes a VToA designator and a called party phone number, extracting information from the input ATM setup message such as the VToA designator and the called party phone number, analyzing the information, designating an ATM address of a called party CPE to be stored in the first parameter of an output ATM setup message, determining if private address translation is needed, designating the ATM address of the called party CPE to be stored in a first instance of the second parameter of the output ATM setup message, designating an ATM address of an egress ATM edge switch to be stored in the first parameter of the output ATM setup message, and generating an output ATM setup message. The method also includes extracting information from the output ATM setup message such as the ATM address of the called party CPE, designating the ATM address of the called party CPE that was stored in the first instance of the second parameter of the output ATM setup message to be stored in the first parameter of a destination ATM setup message, and generating a destination ATM setup message that includes the ATM address of the called party CPE stored in the first parameter and the called party phone number value stored in the second parameter. An illustrative intelligent network for providing VToA and private address translation is also provided.

The present invention provides a method and system for estimating the optimum service rate or bandwidth requirement (BWR) for a switch or router in a communications network for a particular traffic flow which contains elastic traffic, i.e. traffic subject to a feedback mechanism. The invention provides an iterative technique to estimate the optimum service rate from calculated BWRs for the particular traffic flow without initially knowing the precise form of the BWR for various service rates at a buffer of a switch. This is done by initially configuring a service capacity, calculating the BWR to configure a new service capacity and repeating this until the calculated BWR and configured service capacity coincide.

A method and apparatus are disclosed for adjusting the bandwidth of a connection between at least two communication endpoints in a data network via a monitoring unit and a control unit. The connection in the data network is assigned at least one transmission channel for data transmission. The monitoring unit monitors the signaling connection for requests for at least one further communication connection; in particular, a voice connection. The intelligent network includes a multi-service control point, an ATM signaling intercept processor, and a service administration. The multi-service control point receives an input extracted from an input ATM setup message that includes a called party phone number value and a VToA designator, and generates an alias ATM address of a called party CPE that corresponds to a network gateway in communication with a PSTN switch through a plurality of trunk lines and a desired trunk line of the plurality of trunk lines. The multi-service control point generates an output in response that will be used to generate an output ATM setup message that includes the alias ATM address. The ATM signaling intercept processor intercepts the input ATM setup message from an ingress ATM edge switch of the ATM network, extracts the input from the input ATM setup message, communicates the input to the multi-service control point, receives the output generated by the multi-service control point, generates the output ATM setup message using the output, and communicates the output ATM setup message to the ingress ATM edge switch of the ATM network. The service administration provisions the multi-service control point and the ATM signaling intercept processor. An illustrative method for providing VToA and alias addressing is also provided.

Systems and methods for managing deployed trunk circuit capacity in a telecommunications network are disclosed. The usage of groups of trunk circuits in the network can be monitored to collect network traffic data. Analysis of the traffic data provides for computation of performance metrics and calculation of time-moving averages. The analyzed data is input into forecasting models to plan network capacity deployments to meet the expected demand. Network equipment and facilities are provisioned to meet the forecasted plan. Connection routing is adjusted to utilize the provisioned equipment and facilities.

Optimum use is made of a currently available data connection capacity for data signal connections between data terminals, which are connected to a circuit-switched switching center, and/or between these data terminals and a data network, in particular the Internet data network, which is connected to the switching center. For the purpose of making optimum use of the currently available transmission capacity for traffic loads on the switching center, additional transmission capacity to that which is available for normal connections is provided below a first threshold V1. If the traffic load exceeds the first threshold V1, the provision of additional transmission capacity for new data signal connections stops. If the traffic load undershoots a second threshold V2, which may be the same as the first threshold V1, additional transmission capacity for new data signal connections is provided again. If the traffic load exceeds a third threshold V3, which is above, between or below the first and second thresholds V1, V2, then, in addition to the action when the first threshold V1 is exceeded, the additional transmission capacity is removed from at least some existing connections.
