The shuttle is partially disposed within the inlet tube and is configured to be placed in a first position where the shuttle abuts the inlet tube and a second position where the outer surface is disposed in spaced relation to the inlet tube. The base plate extends between a first end portion that defines a cavity therein and a second end portion. The screw assembly is disposed within the cavity of the base plate and is coupled to a portion of the shuttle. The spacer block is interposed between the second end portion of the inlet tube and the first end portion of the base plate and is configured to maintain the inlet tube and the base plate in spaced relation.

A releasable payload return vehicle is also provided, wherein the payload return vehicle generates aerodynamic forces while it is mated to the cargo airship.

An apparatus is provided that includes a solenoid chamber having a plunger configured to create an opening in a first balloon envelope of a balloon system when the solenoid chamber is actuated. The opening enables gas to evacuate from the first balloon envelope. A mixer valve having a nozzle is coupled to the solenoid chamber. The mixer valve is configured to create a gas mixture formed from the gas evacuating from the opening and atmospheric gas. A heating device is attached to the nozzle. The heating device is configured to heat the gas mixture created by the mixer valve. A second balloon envelope is attached to the nozzle. The second balloon envelope is arranged to expand in proportion to a quantity of the heated gas mixture passing through the nozzle. This expansion of the second balloon envelope creates an amount of lift for controlling descent of the balloon system.

A controllable buoyant system (10) includes a support structure having a sealed hollow enclosure (12) containing a first gas and surrounded by a second gas, either the first gas or the second gas being lighter than ambient air. The hollow enclosure is pre-filled with the first gas via a one-way valve that prevents the first gas escaping and an altitude sensor (14) generates an altitude signal indicative of a height of the support structure. A height transducer (17, 21, 61, 66, 67, 68) coupled to the hollow enclosure is responsive to the altitude signal for varying the buoyancy of the support structure. A controller (15) is coupled to the altitude sensor and to the height transducer and is responsive to the altitude signal and to at least one reference altitude signal for automatically controlling the height transducer in order to maintain the support structure buoyant at the preset altitude.

A thermal aircraft, such as a hot air load-carrying balloon which includes a balloon envelope having a deflation aperture therein, a spider extending across the aperture, and a venting valve or operculum designed to removably cover and seal the aperture and to be opened and/or closed rapidly so as to assist in the control of the balloon, forming both a deflation panel and a manoeuvring port for the balloon. A plurality of limiting lines is provided to extend between the venting valve and the spider or the upper part of the envelope, to suspend the venting valve below the aperture when the valve is in its deflation position. The venting valve is removably and releasably secured to the balloon envelope adjacent the periphery of the aperture, and means are provided for controllably and selectively positioning the valve in the aperture for closed, venting and deflating dispositions thereof. Controls are provided firstly to extend the valve to its maximum surface area, at which point it removably covers and seals the aperture, to allow controlled venting of hot air therefrom, and to allow reefing of the valve from the aperture for rapid deflation of the envelope. This provides the pilot with a great deal of control over the flight of the balloon, especially during final landing procedures and especially during such procedures in gusty or windy conditions, contributing significantly to control and safety.
