Media menu items are generated within a media interface environment. Media menu item abstractions are generated, one of the media menu item abstractions arranged in a foreground position, and one or more of the media menu item abstractions arranged in background positions in the media interface environment. Selection of a media menu items transitions to a corresponding content menu interface.
Abstract:
Improved podcasts and techniques that facilitate their use are disclosed. The improved techniques can pertain to creating, publishing, hosting, accessing, subscribing, managing, transferring, and/or playing podcasts. According to one aspect, a client application can subscribe to podcasts and then automatically monitor the podcasts for updates to be downloaded. In the event that user interest in a podcast becomes inadequate, downloading of further updates can be restricted. According to another aspect, a podcast can be subscribed to through use of a portable subscription file. According to still another aspect, podcast feeds can be enhanced to include segment elements and other metadata.
Abstract:
Technologies for generating a menu of favorite media items for presentation to a user are described. In one aspect, input from a user designating a show as a favorite show is received. In response to receiving the input, show information relating to the favorite show is displayed in a first graphical user interface. The show information includes a plurality of shortcuts, each shortcut pointing to a corresponding episode of the favorite show, and indicia displayed concurrently with the shortcuts to mark unwatched episodes. In response to receiving the input, a pointer associated with the favorite show is displayed in a second graphical user interface. The pointer points to the show information displayed in the first graphical user interface, such that the pointer associated with the favorite show is being displayed in the second graphical user interface concurrently with shortcuts associated with one or more other favorite shows.
Abstract:
A video on demand system in the context of the Internet, for video rentals. A user accesses an on-line store to rent a video program or movie. The rental is for a limited time (such as 30 days) and within that thirty days, the video program or movie can only be viewed for a 24 hour time window. The time limits are enforced by the on-line store which maintains a database of each rental transaction and allows supply of the needed keys for decrypting the (encrypted) video or movie only if within the time limits.

A media processing device includes a wireless network interface to establish a wireless network connection and a wired network interface to establish a wired network connection. The wired network connection is established if a network is connected to the wired network interface and the wireless network connection is established if the network is disconnected from the wired network interface.

At least a portion of a media file can be downloaded by accessing one or more items of media data associated with a media file stored on a remote server, wherein the media data includes at least one sample table; receiving input from a user identifying a playback location associated with the media file; determining a plurality of data items required to play at least a portion of the media file from the identified playback location based on the at least one sample table; and transmitting one or more byte-range requests to the remote server using the hypertext transfer protocol to retrieve the plurality of data items. Further, the media file can be progressively downloaded from the identified playback location until the end of the media file is reached, playback of the media file is terminated, or input is received from the user identifying a new playback location.

Improved techniques for synchronization of media contents stored on a media player with media contents stored on a host computer are disclosed. According to one aspect, synchronization can be automatically initiated and performed upon connection of a data link between the media player and the host computer. According to another aspect, synchronization is able to be achieved with a reduced amount of data transfer between the host computer and the media device.

In a portable multimedia device, a method, apparatus, and system for providing user supplied configuration data are described. In one embodiment, a hierarchically ordered graphical user interface are provided. A first order, or home, interface provides a highest order of user selectable items each of which, when selected, results in an automatic transition to a lower order user interface associated with the selected item. In one of the described embodiments, the lower order interface includes other user selectable items associated with the previously selected item from the higher order user interface.
Abstract:
Methods and system for transferring images between devices is disclosed. For example, differently scaled images by a host device may automatically and/or selectively be transferred to a media player for display. In turn, appropriately scaled images may be transferred automatically and/or selectively to another display device for example a TV, camera or printer. The selectivity may occur either at the host level or at the player level.
