摘要: A subscriber unit (104) with multiple receive antennas (160, 162) and a single transmit antenna (160) derives beamforming weights to be used at a base station (102) with multiple transmitting antennas (602, 604, 606, and 608). The downlink beamforming weights are derived at the subscriber unit (104) from a prior downlink transmission from the base station (102) to the subscriber device (104) and an uplink sounding signal is used to carry derived downlink beam forming weights to the base station (102). Downlink antenna specific pilots (without weight) are used at the subscriber device (104) to determine the beamforming weights. Decimated sounding signals, where the number of sounding subcarriers is at least the same as the number of antennas at the base station (102), allow multiple users to sound at the same time.

摘要: A method, wireless device, and wireless communication system perform Maximum Likelihood Detection. At least one data signal is accepting on at least one communication channel (604). The data signal is modulated with a plurality of transmitted bit values. The at least one data signal is sampled in a characteristic function domain of the data signal to produce characteristic function samples (608). A probability density function associated with the at least one data signal is determined, based upon the characteristic function samples (610). Soft decision values are determined, based upon the probability density function, for each transmitted bit value for each dimension of the at least one data signal (612).

摘要: A method for determining a subscriber unit location in a communication system is provided. The method includes the steps of receiving a signal from the subscriber unit at a first base station, determining a first receive time of the signal based on a sequence of spreading symbols at the first base station, determining a first angle of arrival of the signal at the first base station, and determining the location of the subscriber unit from the first receive time, the first angle of arrival, and further predetermined information about the first base station. The signal is formed via modulation by the sequence of spreading symbols.

摘要: The apparatus includes a demodulator (70) responsive to a first received symbol (68) associated with a first transmitted symbol (39). The demodulator has a plurality of outputs (72) and produces a first set of outputs (99). The demodulator (70) is also responsive to a second received symbol (68) associated with a second transmitted symbol (39), and produces a second set of outputs (99). A coherent detector (100) receives some outputs from the first set of outputs (99), producing an estimate of the first transmitted symbol. The coherent detector also receives some outputs from the second set of outputs (99), producing an estimate of the second transmitted symbol. A first energy value (135) and an index (101) are associated with the first estimate, while a second energy value (135) is associated with the second estimate. A averaging circuit (150), which determines an average of the first energy value (135) and the second energy value (135) to produce an average energy value (140), is responsive to the coherent detector (100). A first combiner (130) is responsive to the coherent detector (100), combining the index (101) and the first energy value (135) to produce a weighted index (131). A second combiner (133) is responsive to the averaging circuit (150) and is also responsive to the first combiner (130), combining the weighted index (131) and the average energy value (140) to produce a channel-coded index (141). A deinterleaver (80) is responsive to the second combiner (133), receiving the channel-coded index (141).

摘要: A method and apparatus for determining the location of a communication unit in a CDMA system includes in a first embodiment, sending a location request via a spread spectrum signal to the subscriber (140), and receiving in return a subscriber signal including a response message showing a receive time of a particular symbol of the base's spreading sequence and a transmit time of a particular symbol of the subscriber's spreading sequence. The base (130), along with other receiving base(s) (140), also receives a predetermined symbol of the subscriber spreading sequence, and each determines a respective receive time of the predetermined symbol. The received information is then processed, along with known base location and delay information, to determine the subscriber location. If insufficient number of bases are capable of communicating with the subscriber, for example due to high loading/interference, auxiliary bases (121) are also provided for receiving from or transmitting to the subscriber.

摘要: Various embodiments are described to provide for the transmission and reception of data in an improved manner. Data transmission is improved by including in a transmitter a null generator (110) to generate an output data symbol sequence that exhibits nulls in the frequency domain at particular frequencies that an input data symbol sequence does not. A pilot inserter (120) then adds a pilot symbol sequence to this output data symbol sequence to create a combined symbol sequence. Since the pilot symbol sequence exhibits pilot signals corresponding to the nulls of the output data symbol sequence in the frequency domain, the combined symbol sequence exhibits pilots that are orthogonal to the data in the frequency domain.

摘要: A radio communications device (102) that has multiple receive antennas processes received data communications signals to select between space time coding and spatial multiplexing as a selected transmission technique from a base device (104) that has multiple transmit antennas. A channel throughput (402-412, 450-454) for each transmission technique is estimated based on signal to interference and noise ratios (502-512, 550-554) of signals being transmitted through a MIMO channel (140) as measured by a receiver (708). The transmission technique with the higher estimated throughput is determined. If spatial multiplexing is determined to have the higher estimated throughput and the throughput of each layer of the spatially multiplexed signal is greater than a threshold, spatial multiplexing is selected. Otherwise, space time coding is selected.

摘要: A method of combining soft-handoff with a hybrid ARQ scheme to maximize throughput and gain in a communications system. After receiving a frame from the MS (110), the BTSs (104 and 106) will process the frame and communicate to the MS over a forward control channel whether the frame contained any errors. If all BTSs communicate that the frame contains errors, the MS will retransmit the same frame to all BTSs with a flush bit set to instruct the BTSs 104 and 106 to combine the retransmitted frame with the original frame. If only some BTSs communicate that the frame contains errors, the MS will transmit the next frame to all BTSs that successfully decoded the frame with the flush bit set to instruct the BTSs to erase the previous frame from memory and not to combine the previous frame with the current frame. The MS will retransmit the frame to the BTSs that did not successfully decode the frame with the flush bit set to instruct the BTSs to combine the previous frame with the retransmitted frame.

摘要: A mobile station (110) selects an initial data rate for communication between base station (107) and mobile station (110). Mobile station (110) communicates the selected initial data rate to base station (107) through uplink (112). Base station (107) determines a difference level of interference condition experienced by mobile station (107) between a time when the initial data rate was selected by mobile station (110) and a time when base station (107) prepares to communicate to mobile station (110). Base station (107) selects a final data rate for transmission from base station (107) to mobile station (110) based on the determined difference level of interference condition. As such, the initial data rate may be modified to the final data rate while maximizing the down link capacity.
