Disclosed is a method of joining metallic members together. The metallic members are coated with an undercoat composed of an alloy of tin and zinc and contacted with each other through a mixture containing a solder comprising tin and zinc and a flux, while heating the metallic members to melt the solder. Then the molten solder is solidified to join the metallic members. Here, the ratio of zinc in the undercoat is represented by x (% by weight), the ratio of zinc in the solder is represented by y (% by weight), and the ratio, x, and the ratio, y, are values within an area enclosed by the line A or B in FIG. 1, which satisfies the formulas: 1≦x≦20, 3≦y≦13 and 3≦(x+y)/2≦13, or formulas: 0.1≦x≦25, 2≦y≦15 and 2≦(x+y)/2≦15.

The present invention provides a simple and inexpensive method for producing &agr;-hydroxy-&bgr;-aminocarboxylic acids and their esters. An ester of an N-protected &agr;-amino acid ester is converted into a &bgr;-ketosulfoxide, which is then processed with an acid to give an &agr;-ketohemimercaptal. Next, this is acylated and then processed with a base to obtain an N-protected &agr;-acyloxy-&bgr;-amino-thioester, which is then saponified to obtain an intended compound. According to the method of the present invention, it is possible to produce &agr;-hydroxy-&bgr;-aminocarboxylic acid derivatives, which are intermediates in producing various HIV protease inhibitors, renin inhibitors and carcinostatics, from a-amino acids. The method comprises reduced reaction steps, the selectivity in the method to give the intended product is high, and the yield of the product obtained is high.

In an improved method of treating foul water, the solids that are produced during the process of treatment of foul water such as wastewater or liquid sludges are treated with a heat treatment apparatus and the resulting thermal energy and/or gas is utilized in the treatment of said foul water. The foul water may be subjected, directly and/or after a treatment, to a filtration step using a filter packed with nonflammable particulate matter such as sand, and the trapped solids are fed into a fluidized-bed heat treatment apparatus such as a fluidized-bed incinerator or gasification furnace and, thereafter, the nonflammable particulate matter in the heat treatment apparatus is returned to the filtration step. The foul water can be treated with effective utilization of the energy of the organic matter in the foul water or the solids that are produced during the process of its treatment.
