A light splitting and synthesizing device includes: a polarized beam splitter for splitting a white light into two polarized light beams and for directing the polarized light beams toward different directions; at least one half wave plate for rotating the polarization direction of one of the polarized light beams by 90 degrees so that the polarized light beams have the same polarization; and a synthesizing prism for synthesizing the polarized light beams into one beam. The synthesizing prism includes a substrate having a pair of parallel surfaces, on one of the surfaces an array of prisms with a vertical angle of 60 degrees being formed, the polarized light beams being incident on the array of prisms and being outgoing from the other surface. The half wave plate is disposed such a position that only one of the polarized light beams is incident thereon. Each of the polarized light beams incident on the synthesizing prism enters one face of a respective prism of the prism array and is totally reflected by an opposite face of the respective prism so as to be directed toward the outgoing surface of the synthesizing prism.

A standard color temperature setting circuit sets and outputs one of a plurality of standard color temperature signals for each of a plurality of color temperature regions. A white balance correction control circuit is controlled in dependence on the illumination discriminating signal, the predetermined color temperature detection signals, and the standard color temperature signals so as not to carry out an erroneous white balance adjustment even when the illuminance of the environment is extremely high or low.

A solid-state imaging apparatus comprises an image sensor having an array of photodiodes, a shift register and a transfer gate for transferring electrons developed in the photodiodes to the shift register in response to a gate control signal applied thereto. An optical unit admits light to the photodiode array during an exposure time in response to a shutter-release pulse. High-frequency clock pulses are supplied to the shift register throughout the exposure time to cause the shift register to purge electrons which have been transferred thereto from the photodiodes bypassing the transfer gate in the absence of the gate control signal. Low-frequency clock pulses are generated immediately following the end of the exposure time and supplied to the shift register to cause it to discharge electrons which have been transferred thereto from the conversion areas through the transfer gate to a utilization circuit.
