An apparatus and method for recovering a carrier frequency of a received signal using a predefined symbol in an OFDM system is provided. A maximum value detector detects at least three values and their corresponding offsets in descending order among auto-correlation values calculated within a specific frequency offset range between a received signal and a predefined symbol. A frequency offset corrector compares a ratio of a first auto-correlation value to a second auto-correlation value with a predetermined first threshold, determines whether first and second frequency offsets corresponding to the first and second auto-correlation values are adjacent to each other if the ratio of the auto-correlation values is less than the first threshold, and determines an initial carrier frequency offset using a difference between the first frequency offset and a frequency offset correction value determined according to system, if the first and second frequency offsets are adjacent to each other and a ratio of the second auto-correlation value and a third auto-correlation value is greater than a predetermined second threshold.

A physical layer's HARQ controller determines whether to demodulate and decode the received packet data depending on a decoding result of the control message, outputs the decoded control message to the demodulator and the turbo decoder for demodulation and decoding of the received packet data, controls output of a response signal according to decoding result of the packet data, and delivers the turbo-decoded packet data to an upper layer.

A forward packet data control channel (F-PDCCH) receiver for reducing alarms relating to errors in a packet data control channel for transmitting a control signal in a mobile communication system and a method of using the same. In the F-PDCCH receiver, a decoding part decodes received symbols and calculates an information word and an absolute value of a difference between two path metrics. A false alarm reduction function compares the absolute value received from the decoding part with a predetermined threshold, and outputs a decoding value indicating whether an alarm is generated according to the comparison result. A blind slot format detector detects a blind slot format based on the absolute value received from the decoding part.

When a rate selector selects one data rate among a plurality of data rates, a turbo decoder repeatedly decodes an input data frame within a predetermined repetition limit number using the selected data rate and outputs the decoded data. A CRC detector performs CRC check on the decoded data and outputs the CRC check result, and a decoding state measurer measures decoding quality depending on the decoded data and outputs decoding state information. A controller then sets the repetition limit number to a predetermined minimum value, controls the repetition limit number according to the decoding state information, controls the rate selector and determines a data rate of the input data depending on the CRC check result.

The rate matching device can rate match the symbols encoded with a non-systematic code or the symbols encoded with a systematic code, by changing initial parameters including the number of input symbols, the number of output symbols, and the puncturing or repetition pattern determining parameters.
