摘要: An optical fiber includes a cladding with a material having a first refractive index and a pattern of regions formed therein. Each of the regions has a second refractive index lower than the first refractive index. The optical fiber further includes a core region and a core ring having an inner perimeter, an outer perimeter, and a thickness between the inner perimeter and the outer perimeter. The thickness is sized to reduce the number of ring surface modes supported by the core ring.

摘要: A method for measuring a physical function forms a symmetric composite function by combining the physical function with a reference function. The method obtains a Fourier transform of the symmetric composite function. The method calculates an inverse Fourier transform of the obtained Fourier transform, wherein the calculated inverse Fourier transform provides information regarding the physical function. The physical function can be a nonlinearity profile of a sample with at least one sample surface. The physical function can alternatively by a sample temporal waveform of a sample optical pulse.

摘要: A near-field optical storage system having an optical train configured to produce a reduced beam spot size at the recording layer of an optical medium. A near-field coupling element having a substantially flat surface is implemented to provide optical coupling between the optical train and the optical medium. The flat surface is spaced from the optical medium by a fraction of the operating wavelength. An optical beam is focused beyond the flat surface in order to achieve a small spot size on the recording layer.

摘要: An apparatus modulates the phase of an optical signal. The apparatus includes an optical medium for propagating the optical signal. At least one electrode is positioned in proximity with the medium. The electrode induces an electric field within the medium in response to an AC voltage to produce variations in the index of refraction of the optical medium through the electrostrictive effect. Preferably, the phase of the optical signal is modulated such that polarization components of the optical signal parallel to and orthogonal to the electric field experience an equal phase shift. In certain embodiments, a DC voltage is supplied to the optical medium. Alternatively, the DC voltage within the optical medium may arise from (or be enhanced by) poling the optical medium. Certain embodiments of the present invention include two electrodes positioned on opposite sides of the optical medium. The apparatus is advantageously used in an interferometer to form a device that modulates the amplitude of the optical signal. The apparatus may also be used in an interferometer to form an optical switching device.

摘要: This invention provides an angled-dual-illumination-axis confocal scanning microscope comprising a fiber-coupled, angled-dual-illumination-axis confocal scanning head and a vertical scanning unit. The angled-dual-illumination-axis confocal scanning head is configured such that two illumination beams intersect optimally at an angle &thgr; within an object and the scanning is achieved by pivoting the illumination beams and their corresponding observation beams using a single scanning element, thereby producing an arc-line scan. The vertical scanning unit causes the angled-dual-illumination-axis confocal scanning head to move towards or away from the object, thereby yielding a vertical cross-section scan of the object. The angled-dual-illumination-axis confocal scanning microscope have advantages of enhanced resolution, faster scanning, higher sensitivity and larger dynamic range of detection, a larger field of view and a longer working distance, and a compact and integrated construction.
