An expandable forming plug adapted for use in forming apparatus such as plug assisted vacuum or pressure differential forming machines and the like wherein the plug cooperates with a mold to form hollow articles such as containers, closures, trays, and the like, from thermoplastic synthetic resinous film or sheeting. The expandable plug provides hollow articles which during forming can be programed or controlled, as desired, with respect to thickness distribution in the walls thereof and, more particularly, provides hollow articles with side and bottom walls of desired thickness, such as of substantially uniform or of a varying thickness.

A first molding core is positioned within a first portion of a separable mold having a nonlinear chamber. A second molding core having an end matable with the end of the first core is inserted within a second end portion of the chamber of the mold adjacent and in slidable contact with a third molding core. The first molding core is retractable from the mold and the second and third molding cores are pivotally connected to one of the mold sections for removing the molded article and the second and third molding cores from the mold section. The third molding core is slidable along the second molding core for releasing the article from the second and third molding cores.

A generally hollow article is produced by coating a collapsible, seamless bladder with integrable particles, integrating the particles into a unitary structure, and thereafter removing the bladder therefrom. The apparatus includes coating means to form a fluidizing mass the particles, means for acting upon the bladder to promote adhesion, and means for integrating the particles on the bladder into a hollow article. The bladder is normally nonadherent to the particles, and is comprised of at least one material that is responsive to the adhesion promoting means.

Apparatus for molding plastic articles having an undercut, rib, thread, or the like deformation comprises a core divided longitudinally into sections having molding ends that are radially shiftable to and from an expanded article-molding position and a contracted article-release position. A center pin holds the sections expanded. The core may be shifted axially resulting in the center pin being withdrawn from support of the molding ends of the sections. This causes a cam ring that encircles the sections to urge the sections radially inwardly by the engagement of cam-follower lugs on the sections to collapse positively the sections without interference from the pin.
