The present invention is directed to an apparatus which is suited for use by women, children and the like who have limited physical strength to continuously stamp embossed patterns with clear outlines with the same spacing. A press roller is provided with an embossed pattern stamping die on a circular external circumferential surface, with its rotating shaft supported by bearings at a specific position, and is caused to perform axial rotation by a rotating drive force applied from the outside. A receptacle portion faces opposite the external circumferential surface of the press roller, with its opposing surface constituted as a flat surface or a convex surface to form a gap between itself and the press roller where a sheet-like object to be stamped is to be inserted.

The perceived softness of embossed tissue can be increased greatly while avoiding nesting when a particular pattern is embossed into the tissue. This pattern combines relatively shallow stitchlike bosses with deeper more sharply defined signature bosses. The stitchlike bosses can be rounded and arranged in wavy flowing intersecting lines. The signature bosses can be arranged in regions framed by the intersecting wavy flowing lines.

An embossed tissue having improved bulk and puffiness while being non-nesting by having a lattice pattern and at least two signature bosses. More particularly, one of the signature bosses is defined by embossments having a lower portion which is continuous and an upper portion which is defined by crenels and merlons.

This invention relates to the discovery that the perceived softness of embossed tissue can be increased greatly while avoiding prior art nesting problems if a particular pattern is embossed into the tissue. This pattern combines relatively shallow stitchlike debossments with deeper more sharply defined signature debossments. The stitchlike debossments are rounded and arranged in wavy flowing intersecting lines. The signature debossments are arranged in regions framed by the intersecting wavy flowing lines.

A converted product which is particularly high both in bulk and in perceived softness is produced by pre-embossing the plies individually, joining the plies and calendering and again embossing. In another example, the pre-emboss step is omitted.
Abstract:
An extensible multi-ply tissue paper product having high tensile energy absorption (TEA); high liquid absorbency; and, preferably, high tensile strength efficiency. The product comprises plies which are preferably embossed and discontinuously adhered together. The product has high tensile energy absorption by virtue of having substantial extensibility in the machine direction which, preferably, results from its constituent plies having substantial MD extensibility induced by having undergone wet and/or dry foreshortening during their manufacture. The product has synergistically high liquid absorbency by virtue of at least two plies of the product having sufficiently different stress/strain properties that one ply will sufficiently constrain unadhered portions of the other ply from being elongated in the plane of the paper when wetted that such unadhered portions of the constrained ply will pucker in the Z-direction as its foreshortening-induced internal stresses are relieved. Preferably, the constraining ply is high bulk, wet-microcontracted tissue paper, and the other ply is dry-foreshortened tissue paper: e.g., dry-creped tissue paper. Also, the plies of preferred embodiments preferably have nominally equal MD extensibilities at rupture. Such preferred products have high tensile strength efficiency which is manifested by their having monomodal stress/strain characters. Embodiments of the invention such as two and three ply paper towels are especially useful for spill wipe-up applications.
Abstract:
Absorbent paper sheets in multi-ply web form in which the outer webs of the sheet are creped and consist of a series of ribs and grooves. The webs have their ribs secured together by adhesive dispersed in a pattern consisting of individual adhesive zones. The adhesive zones are obtained by providing in embossing apparatus cooperable rolls each having alternating ribs and grooves, the ribs of one roll being provided with protuberances and the other with recesses. The protuberances cover a relatively small area of the total rib area and carry a web on the protuberances through an adhesive applicator so that a relatively small area of the web receives adhesive for attachment to a second web.
