The present invention is an atmospheric resistance-based corrosion sensor that allows atmospheric corrosion rates to be measured, dynamically and frequently. The following are the components of the present invention. The resistance of a strip of 6 cm×0.5 cm and 50 μm thickness is approximately 40 mΩ at room temperature. This resistance is less than the any lead that would be required to measure it, and therefore a 4-point Kelvin measurement method was required. The present invention is broken down to four components: a sensor metallic strip [singular or multiple at ˜(50 μm-200 μm) manufactured from the metal of interest] conductively bonded to a circuit board with two conducting pads that link the circuits together, a first circuit that passes a known calibrated current, and a second circuit that passes no current.

The housing assembly includes a housing that encloses the electrical assembly. The electrical assembly includes a battery, a microprocessor, a display, a keypad, a power button, an electrical port, and test cables. The microprocessor permits the user to simulate a fuse. The microprocessor has a memory in which a predetermined catalogue of fuses characteristics is stored. The user connects the test cables to a circuit board where the fuse is blown. The keypad allows the user to type the simulation characteristics while the display shows the results of the simulation.

The invention relates to a portable electronic test device which includes a casing which houses therein at least six discrete electronic instruments including an oscilloscope, a spectrum analyser, a logic analyser, a waveform generator, a digital pattern generator and a power supply. The invention extends to a method of assessing an operator's proficiency to use the electronic test device by: crotographically authenticating the operator prior to permitting the operator to use the electronic device using an electronic tag coupled to the electronic device; automatically evaluating, using a computing device, an assignment carried out by the operator using the electronic device; and electronically storing a result of the evaluation on the tag in order to keep track of the operator's proficiency in using the electronic device.

The first device can include offset circuitry. The offset circuitry receives two voltage signals. The first voltage signal is equal to a first voltage value that is used as a reference voltage in the first device. The second voltage signal can be a time-varying voltage signal that has a known relationship with a second voltage value that is used as a reference voltage in the second device. The offset circuitry can then determine the second voltage value from the second voltage signal, and output an offset value based on a difference between the first voltage value and the second voltage value.

The secondary unit is not directly user controllable. The power states of the two units are coordinated using an actuator mechanism when the units are attached. The second sensor includes a Rogowski coil that has a non-magnetic core and inductively senses the alternating current. The processor receives an input signal in a first voltage range and sends an output signal to the digital display. The integrator scales a signal from the second sensor in a second voltage range to the first voltage range. The housing includes the processor, the integrator, and a selector configured to select the input signal to the processor from one of the first sensor and the integrator.

Diagnosing electrical circuit faults can be accomplished with a variety of tools. Voltmeters are frequently used to measure voltage to determine whether a short is present, but are not well-suited for finding intermittent faults caused by corroded connectors or excessive voltage drop under operating loads. Measuring a static voltage without load using a voltmeter can yield misleading results. A diagnostic tool that is simple to use and that yields a definitive result is preferred in certain applications such as automotive electrical system diagnosis due to the varying skill level of technicians and the variation in field conditions in automotive shops. A simple, inexpensive diagnostic tool that can be used with minimal or no training allows rapid diagnosis of circuit faults that result from a the inability of a measured circuit to supply a minimum current at a minimum voltage.
