摘要: The present invention relates to tools and methods for welding, coating, repairing, or otherwise modifying the surface of a metal substrate. More specifically, embodiments of the present invention provide self-reacting friction stir welding tools which have an internal channel that allows filler materials to be added to the weld joint or otherwise friction stir processed area. Embodiments also provide friction stir tooling having upper and lower shoulders disposed at a fixed distance from one another and connected by a fixed split-pin. The tooling can be configured for automatically dispensing varying amounts of filler material into the tooling in response to variations in thickness of a substrate being processed.

摘要: The present invention discloses a method of forming a metallic coating layer utilizing media having high energy which are capable of employing every kind of solid particulate.By employing the media having high energy, metallic powders as coating material are stricken onto the surface of an object to be coated so as to increase gradually the thickness of the metallic coating layer by repeating the aforementioned striking operation. Thus, the component of the metallic coating layer may be mechanically alloyed with the object to be coated.

摘要: A method for lapping of gun barrels on fully assembied firearms is provided using cartridges fitted with lapping bullets impregnated with abrasive. The present invention provides a process for simultaneously impregnating a quantity of lapping bullets with an abrasive, in which a quantity of unlubricated bullets are placed in a tumbler with steel balls and quantity of the desired abrasive. The speed of rotation of the tumbler, and the shape of the tumbler are selected so that the bullet/abrasive/tumbling media mix folds on itself, thus providing an even impregnation of abrasive on the bullets and minimizing any deformation of the bullets. The mixture is allowed to tumble for a period of time, typically about an hour, after which a sufficient quantity of the abrasive is firmly embedded on the surface of each bullet. The abrasive impregnated bullets can then be coated with a protective and lubricating finish, such as carnauba wax, if desired. The abrasive-impregnated bullets can then be sized and lubricated and loaded into a cartridge containing gun powder and a wad positioned against the base of each bullet. Using this procedure, it is possible to manufacture in quantity a series of lapping cartridges having coarse, medium, fine and polishing grits impregnated on the bullets. Pressure (Fire) Lapping can then be carried out in stages using the loaded cartridges by firing through the barrel a series of lapping bullets impregnated with coarse abrasive, followed in order by the lapping bullets with the medium, fine and polishiing grits. The barrel is cleaned and checked after every ten rounds or so, or when changing from one type grit to another. This process removes dimensional variations and roughness in the bore, and produces a gun barrel which is more accurate, and less susceptible to copper, carbon and lead fouling.

摘要: Powder-content of a powder-coating is enhauced. Powder material forms a skeleton structure. The clearances are filled with resin. The coating comprises a resin layer which bonds the power-compacted layer to the parts or any underlying powder-compacted layer. The work pieces on which a resin film may be preliminarily formed, is subjected to vibration or stirring together with the powder material and means for mediating the formation of the coating, which eans is of substantially smaller size than said work pieces and greater size than said powder material, as well as with or without the resin, to vibration or stirring in a container.

摘要: In a mechanical plating process, oxidation-prone metals, such as aluminum, titanium, magnesium, and mixtures thereof, can be applied to metal substrates without the corrosion problems encountered in the prior art. To avoid such problems, the substrate is plated with the oxidation-prone metal and relatively minor amounts of an immersion metal and, optionally, a protective metal. The immersion metal which can be salts or oxides of metals selected from the group consisting of tin, copper, nickel, cadmium, zinc, lead, and mixtures thereof coats the oxidation-prone metal in forming a mechanical plating coating and prevents formation of an oxide layer on the oxidation-prone metal. The protective metal which may be selected from the group consisting of zinc, cadmium, and mixtures thereof prevents oxidation of the plated metal substrate when exposed to the environment. An etching agent is used either prior to and/or during mechanical plating.

摘要: Major improvements in Mechanical Barrel Plating are virtual elimination of expensive glass impact media, elimination of larger size glass balls such as 3 mm and 5 mm, with replacement by assorted pieces of small high density rubber or equivalent non-staining pieces acting to stay inside the tumbling mass to lift the article in the charge and to interrupt streamline flow to cause random disoriented movement whereby complete uniform coverage of the articles being coated is achieved. The further improvement resulting from the elimination of large masses of small glass beads and balls creating an open permeable mix permitting easy access of the plating metal powder such as Zinc to the article being coated. For reaching into thread roots, recessed areas, the use of greatly reduced quantities of sharp quartz sand that does not become lodged because of the use of an improved chemistry containing powerful silicon or other lubricants, lodgement being further prevented by the smearing or scraping action of the rubber pieces such as non-staining white neoprene rubber. Alternatively to the quartz sand, small quantities of irregular glass beads so cheap that they can be discarded after each run, or a mixture of quartz and irregular discardable glass beads added to improve smoothness and shine. The use of the rubber pieces serves to prevent chipping and wear on sharp edges permitting use of large heavy objects without damage and with uniform coverage and penetration on all surfaces being plated, and further the optional use of foaming agents to further cushion and distribute the metal power such as Zinc to all surfaces being coated.

摘要: A new composition for promoting mechanical plating, a process using the composition and the resulting article are disclosed. The new composition employs an acidic or alkaline flux and at least one silicone compound. When used in combination with a finely divided metal under mechanical plating conditions, exceptional metal coatings are produced. Also disclosed is the use of metal cleaning agents in the composition to further enhance the results obtained from the mechanical plating process. In addition, foaming agents may be used to generate a foam which aids in making the plating slurry transportable.

The blast material comprises 60-90% by weight of steel shot and 10-40% by weight of a coating powder which is an alloy comprising 2.5-50% by weight of iron, not more than 5% by weight of aluminum, copper, tin, magnesium and silicon or a combination thereof and the balance being zinc. The powder has a maximum particle size of about 0.4 mm and an average hardness of 140-450 Hv. The continuous mechanical process comprises continuously blasting the blast material onto a metal part, recycling the used blast material and magnetically separating abraded fine particles of the steel shot in the course of the recycling.
