Abstract: In one example, a method comprises receiving, by a forwarding manager for an internal forwarding path executed by at least one packet processor of a forwarding unit of a network device, one or more packet processing operations from a control unit of the network device; generating, by the forwarding manager based on the one or more packet processing operations, a plurality of nodes each comprising a unique token, wherein a first node of the plurality of nodes includes a token reference set to a value for the token of a second node of the plurality of nodes; configuring, by the forwarding manager based on the nodes, the forwarding path to include respective forwarding path elements for the plurality of nodes; and processing, by the packet processor, a packet received by the forwarding unit by executing the forwarding path elements.

Abstract: Concepts and technologies disclosed herein are directed to routing stability in a hybrid software-defined networking (“SDN”) network in which control plane functionality is shared between a centralized SDN controller and a plurality of local routers. The controller can collect data plane messages from the plurality of local routers, extract information corresponding to source nodes and edges of a graph representative of the hybrid SDN network, and store the information as entries in a table. The controller can identify any outdated entries and remove any outdated entries from the table. The controller can obtain recovered information missing from the information collected from the data plane messages. The controller also can calculate an effective capacity of the edges. The controller can then generate a stable routing pattern based upon the recovered information and the effective capacity. The controller can deploy the stable routing pattern in the hybrid SDN network.

Abstract: In one example, a management component executing on a single-chassis network device configures a virtual node with an abstract fabric interface having, as a destination address, identifiers of packet processors (e.g., PTFE-IDs) assigned to the virtual node on the other end of the abstract fabric interface. The management component of the single-chassis network device pre-creates an underlay network by using the fabric links at the packet processor. When the management component creates and connects an abstract fabric interface on the virtual nodes, the management component forms an overlay network and attaches the overlay network to the underlay network, e.g., by programming the forwarding plane packet processor, to connect the virtual nodes. However, users of the network device, external devices, and routing protocols will not view the abstract fabric interface as an overlay interface, but as a regular Ethernet interface (e.g., a Gigabit Ethernet interface)

Abstract: A method of utilizing the same hardware network interface card (NIC) in a gateway of a datacenter to communicate datacenter tenant packet traffic and packet traffic for a set of applications that execute in the user space of the gateway and utilize a network stack in the kernel space of the gateway. The method sends and receives packets for the datacenter tenant packet traffic through a packet datapath in the user space. The method sends incoming packets from the NIC to the set of applications through the datapath in the user space, a user-kernel transport driver connecting the kernel network stack to the datapath in the user space, and the kernel network stack. The method receives outgoing packets at the NIC from the set of applications through the kernel network stack, the user-kernel transport driver, and the data path in the user space.

Abstract: Measures, including methods, systems, non-transitory computer-readable storage mediums and computer programs for use in routing packet data. At a network switching device, a data packet is received from a device located upstream of the network switching device. The received data packet comprises routing data associated with a routing decision which has been taken for the data packet upstream of the network switching device. The routing data comprises an abstract media access control (MAC) address corresponding to a next hop destination for the data packet located downstream of the network switching device. At the network switching device, the abstract MAC address in the data packet is replaced with a real MAC address of the next hop downstream destination. At the network switching device, the data packet is forwarded towards the next hop downstream destination.
