A driving shaft having a rectangular or polygonal cross-section and extending through the inner passage of the slender frame slidably passes through a correspondingly shaped hole of one of a pair of bevel gears. The pair of bevel gears forms a power transmission mechanism for each rotary disk, the gears engaging each other and both secured to a bevel gear housing. Accordingly, the damaging influence of waved and/or twisted motion of the slender frame on the power transmission mechanisms, is prevented.

The present invention is directed to a lawn mower wherein a lawn mower body frame includes a motor and an operatively connected transmission. The lawn mower motor body frame is supported by front and rear wheels. At least the rear wheels are independently supported on separate shafts which are rotatably disposed with respect to the lawn mower body frame. Pulleys are positioned concentrically on each of the separate shafts in opposing, spaced apart relationship to define a gap therebetween. A belt is disposed in said gap and operatively connected to the motor through the transmission to impart rotation to the rear wheels. The pulleys, the separate shafts, and the rear wheels are positioned relative to each other to permit slippage therebetween to facilitate a change in the direction of the lawn mower.

A single row corn harvesting unit of a normally multiple unit corn head adapted to be mounted at the forward end of a crop harvesting combine and comprising a pair of "snapping rolls" or stalk rolls extending forwardly in cantilever fashion in contiguous relation to each other from a gear subassembly, the snapping rolls cooperating with each other in the corn harvesting operation. The rearward end of each snapping roll has a driven bevel gear mounted thereon, the two driven bevel gears comprising part of the gear subassembly. A drive shaft is suitably mounted for rotation and a double bevel gear which also forms part of the gear subassembly is mounted on the drive shaft. The double bevel gear has opposed gear faces each respectively adapted to drivingly engage a corresponding driven bevel gear on one of said respective snapping rolls. The double bevel gear has a spline on the inner periphery thereof and the portion of the axial length of the drive shaft which receives the double bevel gear has a spline on the outer periphery thereof which is adapted to receive and to mate with the spline on the inner periphery of the double bevel gear, whereby the double bevel gear is freely slidable along the spline on the drive shaft to permit the double bevel gear to automatically center itself with respect to the driven bevel gears on the snapping rolls.

An agricultural crop harvester's feeding and gathering units are driven by a power source on the harvester through a sheave assembly journaled on a countershaft mounted towards the rear of the feeding unit. Power is then transmitted by a variable ratio V-belt drive to a speed reducing and direction reversing planetary gear unit mounted forwardly on the feeding unit and finally to the gathering and feeding mechanisms by drives of conventional design. In the variable ratio V-belt drive, the effective diameter of a split sheave output portion of the countershaft sheave assembly is selectively adjusted hydraulically while, in inverse response, the effective diameter of a spring loaded variable driven split sheave, integral with the planetary gear unit, adjusts automatically. In addition, the driven sheave is provided with a coaxial cam arrangement responsive to changes in torque transmitted so that its effective diameter also adjusts automatically to provide appropriate belt tension. Interposing a speed reducing planetary gear unit in the drive system following the V-belt drive makes possible the use of comparatively higher belt speeds and smaller sheave diameters and facilitates provision of a selectively reversible drive to the gathering and feeding units. The reversed speed of rotation of the output of the planetary unit is substantially lower than its forward speed.

A self-propelled combine has a pair of forward drive wheels driven through a transmission having its input connected to the engine output shaft by a belt drive that includes an upper, fixed ratio portion and a lower, infinitely variable portion. The output sheave of the fixed ratio drive is an integral part of one of the sheave elements of the variable diameter drive sheave of the variable speed belt drive, said sheaves being mounted on a common shaft carried by a swingable arm on the side of the combine, the diameter of the variable diameter drive sheave being controlled by a hydraulic cylinder within the variable diameter sheave, the shiftable sheave element on said sheave being connected to the opposite element by a spline connection. The driven sheave in the variable speed belt drive is also a variable diameter sheave and includes spring means that operates between the opposite sheave elements to provide the belt tension. A cam also interconnects the opposite sheave elements to cause axial sheave motion and consequent increased belt tension when one sheave element rotates relative to the other due to increased torque transmitted through the driven sheave. The belt tension in the variable speed drive is automatically transmitted to the belt in the fixed ratio drive.

[Also in Division F2] A self-propelled appliance controlled by a person walking therewith comprises a power source, driving wheels or endless-tracks, transmission means including a coupling in which a driven member driven by the power source and a driving member driving the wheels are arranged to slip during all normal operation of the appliance, a manually operable control device actuated by force applied thereto as a result of relative movement between appliance and person, and means interconnecting the control device and the driving member of the coupling to cause translational movement of the driving member upon actuation of the control device and thereby vary the extent of the slip as a function of the applied force. As shown, the handle 2 of a suction cleaner carries a slidable handgrip 37 connected by bellows 38, 40 and a flexible plastics pipe 39 containing a compressible fluid to a linkage 40 1 , 42, 42 1 controlling swinging about a pivot 36 1 of a lever 36 (shown only in part) carrying a pulley 12 driven by a belt 11 from a pulley 10 on a motordriven shaft 8. A bevelled friction element 33 on the pulley 12 engages upon swinging of the pulley 12 to either side of a neutral position with a friction element 34 or 35 on one of driving members 27, 28 and urges the driving member into contact with a friction disc 31 or 32 on one of driven members 29, 30 secured to a shaft 20.
