A method for the production of refractory bricks, major components of which are a high proportion of chromium oxide and a small proportion of titanium oxide, makes provision for the chromium oxide and titanium oxide to be mixed, moulded and fired in a reducing atmosphere in order to achieve a solid solution of the titanium oxide in the chromium oxide. The fired intermediate units are then crushed. Other units are then formed from the sieve fractions of the crushed intermediate units and these are fired in a second firing operation to produce the refractory bricks. Non-fired chromium oxide is added to the sieve fractions of the crushed intermediate units and mixed in with this. The other units which are to be reductive-fired in the second firing operation are formed from this mixture.

An improved chromia-magnesia refractory product of co-fused chromia-magnesia grains bonded by an in situ formed chromia bond is prepared by substantially avoiding the presence of grains that will pass through a screen with openings of 150 microns. The resultant product exhibits improved resistance to silicieous materials such as are present in coal slags.

The gasification of coal can be accomplished more efficiently if it is operated at a temperature high enough so that the mineral constituents of the coal will form a molten slag which can be continuously removed from the gasifier during operation. Proper control of such a process requires careful temperature control, but the molten coal slag has been found to be corrosive to most thermocouple materials and to conventional refractory ceramics which are used as thermocouple protection tubes in other environments. It has now been found that magnesium chromite serves satisfactorily as a corrosion resistant refractory material in molten coal slags, and that thermocouple protection tubes of this material can be made by isostatic pressing of granular magnesium chromite and subsequent firing.
