摘要: A method of making and an etchable wafer substrate for use in making optical fiber array plates includes forming a progressively increasing series of metrology holes when the plate holes are formed. The variation between designed plate hole diameter and actual plate hole diameter is determined by sequentially inserting a probe of known designed diameter into the metrology holes to determine the two size-adjacent metrology holes variation. The plate hole diameter can be determined by comparing one of the size-adjacent metrology hole diameter with the respective art work metrology hole diameter. Plate hole diameters can then be corrected for variation with further processing.

摘要: The invention provides for novel substituted-polyaryl chromophoric compounds which desirably comprise a single diazo group, and optimally include a plurality of diazo groups. Preferably the chromophores exhibit optical nonlinear second-order properties and have unique absorption maximum and other chromophoric properties that make them useful for, among other things, muitifonctional optical switches or waveguides.

摘要: Waveguides formed via direct deposition of reflective material on isolated surfaces of the waveguides rather than on every surface of the waveguides are described. It is contemplated that direct deposition facilitates deposition on isolated surfaces. Deposition only on isolated surfaces reduces costs and risks. Cost is reduced by reducing the amount of reflective material required. Risk of metal particles plugging the waveguide reduced both by the decrease in amount of reflective material used, and in the method of depositing it.

摘要: A method and apparatus for a VOA with improved wavelength-dependent optical losses is provided. The primary elements of this improved VOA are a package, a movable structure with a reflecting surface, and a collimator. The collimator is comprised of various optical components including a ferrule holding at least two waveguides and a lens. Selecting a ferrule and a lens such that the plane containing the end of the ferrule and the ends of the waveguides is not parallel to the facing end of the lens, it is possible to determine positions and axial orientations of the ferrule with respect to the lens which result in minimal wavelength-dependent optical losses. By geometrically configuring the optical components of the collimator in this way, and subsequently positioning and axially orienting the collimator and movable structure to minimize wavelength-dependent losses, a VOA with minimal wavelength-dependent optical losses can be constructed.

摘要: A direct-view optical microscope system is provided which uses high-energy light from a phenomenon known as non-resonant Raman-scattering to illuminate a biological specimen. One embodiment of the system combines two discrete light sources to form a combined incident light source for the microscope. The system includes a method and apparatus for modulating the intensity of the scattered light when two light waves are combined to produce the incident light. By varying the frequency of the two source light waves, the intensity of the combined Raman-scattered light can be modulated to achieve finer resolution. In one embodiment, the system provides illumination and observation of microscopic agglutination events between pathogenic antigens and specific antibodies, for prompt detection and identification in the field.

摘要: A Lyot depolarizer for depolarizing a laser with multiple longitudinal modes comprises two segments of PM fiber optimized for length as a function of the longitudinal mode spacing of the laser source, and not as taught in the prior art as a function of the laser coherence length. The present invention has found secondary coherence peaks in the coherence function of a multiple longitudinal mode source, which can significantly worsen the DoP if the PM fiber lengths are significantly extended beyond optimum, contrary to the teaching in the prior art. The present invention makes use of the periodic structure of the source spectrum by converting half the longitudinal modes to an orthogonal polarization state. As a result a significantly shorter fiber depolarizer is needed than for a single longitudinal mode source. Greater temperature stability is achieved by properly adjusting the lengths of both segments of PM fiber.

摘要: An optical fiber closure includes a housing having opposing walls, each of the opposing walls having an aperture defined therein. Each aperture is adapted to receive an optical fiber therethrough. A bend limiter is proximate each aperture. Each bend limiter includes a proximate edge, a distal edge, and an arcuate surface. The arcuate surface extends between the proximate and distal edges and has a radius of curvature greater than a predetermined minimum bend radius. The distal edge of each bend limiter is substantially aligned with an outer edge of a respective one of the opposing walls of the optical fiber closure.
